Weekly News! 06.12.24
Year 6 have enjoyed another wonderful week of learning! Well done to Jess for winning Professor Fuzzball this week and to Team Periwinkle for winning Captain Macaroni. Here's what we've been up to:
Maths
This week, we continued our Fractions study by looking at adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator before moving on to different denominators. We then moved on to identifying properties of 2D shapes and classifying them before completing a number card related problem-solving activity on Friday. Next week, we will be looking at area and perimeter.
English
We have continued reading Skellig and couldn't believe when Mina discovered Skellig's wings. In our English lessons, we have focused on poetry, writing a group poem about angels, birds or fear (based on the themes of Skellig) before writing our own Winter themed poems based on William Blake's 'To Winter'. We then created some wonderful artwork to publish our poems on to in the style of William Blake. Next week, we will be writing narratives.
Thematic
We have continued working through our 'My Home, My Country' thematic unit, focusing on Geography after finishing our History learning. First, we looked at how the geography of York (Jorvik) encouraged the Vikings to settle there before studying a range of different map types to decide where to invade in Kent as the Vikings (look out Canterbury!). We then look at the different Ordnance Survey symbols before adding them to a map of Ramsgate and learnt about how to find six figure grid references. Next week, we will continue our Geographing learning by completing fieldwork.
Love to Learn
Please learn these spellings for a test next week. They all have the 'sh' sound using 'si' or 'ssi'. For their home learning task, please could you complete a piece of work showcasing these spellings. This can be done in a creative way of your choosing.
