We are now back in full swing in Year 5 and it’s been a busy week as always. Clubs are all now up and running, Thrive playtimes have been a huge success and we have made good progress in our learning.
English
This week, we have been refining our journalistic skills. We have looked at online newspaper reports about the 100m sprint final in 2012, during which Bolt won a gold medal and also became the world’s fastest man. We learnt how to choose vocabulary to make our reports biased or unbiased and also learnt how to vary our sentence structures by using an active and passive voice.
Next week, we will be publishing our news reports and also adding a video from our computing lessons to create an online news report. We will also begin to explore poetry linked to an event in the book.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been rounding numbers up to 1,000,000. We have then been using this skill to estimate answers to find errors. We have also solved two-step word problems involving adding and subtracting.
Next week, we will be learning how to find factors of numbers and then using this knowledge to find prime and composite numbers.
Thematic
This week, we have been learning how to timeline events in relation to events known to them and their own lives. We have learned who the Anglo-Saxons were and where they came from. We also learned about Old English and made some of our own riddles using Old English.
Next week, we will be looking at both jewellery and weapons made during Anglo-Saxon time and also how this relates to Anglo-Saxon life. We will also learn how we have found out about this period of history by looking at historical sites.
Love to Learn
1. Please research Anglo-Saxon jewellery or weapons. Design (and make if possible) your own. This could be on paper (2D) or get creative and make a replica (3D). Please bring these in to add to our Thematic display.
NEW MESSAGE! One of our Guided Reading lessons this week will be cosy and comfy story time. On Thursday 23rd January, the children are invited to bring in blankets or teddies from home to snuggle with whilst we have story time. This is optional.
