What a busy yet wonderful week it has been in Year 5! Swimming, publishing our own How To Live In Space books and painting a moody night sky for a winter display are just a few examples of our learning this week.
English
Continuing from last week's learning, we have drafted, edited and started publishing our own explanation text. We looked at how conjunctions are used to show time order and also how certain actions result in another action. We also looked at how to use technical vocabulary to make us sound like an expert.
Next week, we will finish publishing our space books. After that, we will focus on what makes an effective story and then plan and begin to write our own extended stories.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been learning about units of measure involved with length. We learned how to convert between mm, cm, m and km and also used our skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing to solve measure problems.
Next week, we will be exploring capacity and volume. We will learn how to convert these units of measure and also solve problems.
Thematic
This week, we have been learning about the phases of the Moon. We have learnt why we don’t see the whole face of the Moon every night. We have also created our final piece of artwork; we created mood in our paintings of the night sky. These are going to be displayed in the hall and our classroom.
Next week, we will be learning about the Moon landings and also taking part in our termly BIG FAT QUIZ!
Love to Learn
-
Please continue with your 4 week challenge about the phases of the Moon. It is due in on Wednesday 18th December.
-
In addition, we would like you to find out why these symbols are often seen at Christmas:
-
Team Cyan: bells and stars
-
Team Turquoise: candles and candy canes
You can present this any way you wish.
-
If you have any empty plastic bottles we could use for exploring capacity, please bring them in on Monday.
Don’t forget! We have also set lots of books to read on MyOn. They are linked to our Stargazer thematic lessons. Please record in your reading record when you have read one. It counts towards your 4x weekly reading at home sessions.
