Weekly News 6.12.24
Here is what we have been up to this week…
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning about perimeter and area. The children have learnt to add the lengths of the sides of a 2D shape to find the perimeter. With area, the children have learnt that area is measured in cm² and they have counted cm squares inside 2D rectilinear shapes to find the area of the shape. We then went on to start our statistics learning. This week we have learnt how to interpret data in bar graphs and how to present our own data in a bar graph. We have learnt about the x axis and y axis and about the scale going up the y axis. The children have been fantastic when learning about statistics so far this week and have really excelled in this area. Here is a link to a fun website where the children can create lots of different graphs https://www.transum.org/software/SW/ShowOfHands/Default.asp
Next week we will continue with statistics and will be learning to interpret and present data in time graphs. We will also begin our learning about measuring length were we will estimate and measure lengths and convert units of length e.g. 150cm = 1 ½ m.
English
In English this week we have been learning how to create imagery in poetry using figurative language. The figurative language skills we have used are alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification. I think you will be impressed that the children understand these language skills and can use them very effectively to write some beautiful poetry. Our poetry was base on Ice Palace and the Wintery Wilderness that the main character Ivan travels through. We have finished reading ‘Ice Palace’ this week; the children were sad to finish as they said they have really enjoyed the story! Ask your child to tell you about the interesting ending!
The children have also been busy performing poetry this week. Here we are bravely performing to the class..
Next week, we will be learning about different forms of poetry such as limericks, haiku and acrostic poems and writing our own winter and Christmas versions of these poems.
Thematic
In our ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ themed learning this week, we have moved onto our science learning. The children have learnt about the different types of teeth and what they are used for; incisors, canines and molars. We then learnt about the digestive system. We found out about the parts of the digestive system (mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, rectum and anus) and learnt what happens in each part. We labelled diagrams of the digestive system and wrote about the journey of a piece of food through it. The children were really fantastic at using the science vocabulary that they had learnt. We finished off the week by learning about food chains using the key vocabulary of carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, producer, consumer, prey and predator. We created food chains that would exist in a tropical rainforest habitat.
Next week we will be learning about what happens if part of a food chain is disrupted and also about classifying animals into vertebrates and invertebrates.

Love to Learn
In science this week, we have been learning about food chains and you made some food chains for a tropical rainforest habitat. For this week’s task we would like you to create some food chains for a different habitat. You could choose a savanna grassland, arctic, woodland or coral reef habitat, or one of your own choice. A key thing to remember is that the arrows show the direction of energy flow. Please label the producer, prey and predators in your food chains and if they are herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. You could cut out and stick in pictures of the plants and animals or draw your own pictures. If you wanted to be really adventurous, you could make a model of your food chain!
We look forward to seeing your home learning! Please could this challenge be handed in by Wednesday 11th December.
