One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 14.02.25

It’s the end of term 3 and we are officially halfway through Year 4. The time is flying by but we’re excited to see how much more Year 4 will grow over the second half of our time together. Let’s have a look at what we’ve been learning this week!

English

This week in English we finished reading our book ‘Pebble in my Pocket’ and learning how to describe the events of the book poetically. We reviewed our knowledge of similes, metaphors and personification and created some outstanding poetry with beautiful, creative language.

Next term we will begin our book ‘The Boy at the back of the Class’ by Onjali Rauf. This tells the story of a London primary school who have a mysterious boy show up at their school and they have no idea why.

Maths

This week in maths we have returned to fractions. Year 4 could remember all their key vocabulary such as numerator, denominator and equivalent and so now we have been learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions. We have been working on adding and subtracting these fractions and how to convert between the two. It’s been fantastic revisiting this topic as Year 4 have demonstrated how far their knowledge has come and how well they retain their learning.

Next term we will begin by looking into the decimal equivalent of certain fractions.

Thematic/RE

We began the week with our final thematic lesson wherein the children used their knowledge of triangulation and structures to create the most stable structures they could. It was wonderful to get the chance to put their knowledge into action and work together to merge their individual plans into a cohesive, rigid structure.

We then spent the remainder of the week learning about Hinduism. Hindus worship many gods and create shrines to make offerings to particular gods, depending on what aspect of their life they may need help with. Their temples are beautiful and diverse in their design and many of their texts are written in Sanskrit.

Next term we will be beginning our new topic ‘Innovation Station’.

Love to Learn

Since Year 4 created such lovely poetry this week, we would love to see some more about a different subject.

Could you write us a poem about somewhere you have been in your half-term? It could be about Ramsgate beach, your garden, your bathtub or the moon (if that is where you go on holiday)!

Make sure to include similes, personification and metaphors.

We can’t wait to read them!
