One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 06.12.24

Another wonderful week for Year 3! It was lovely to welcome in family for our Come Dine With Me lunch and we are very excited for the upcoming events still to come this term.

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we began our learning on The Princess and the White Bear King as we started off making astute predictions about the story by discussing the title, cover and blurb. We clarified meaning by exploring unfamiliar vocabulary and answered retrieval and comprehension questions. In the week, we used the iPads to access Myon to read books of our choice online.

Next week, we will be continuing our text ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’.

English

In English this week, we used our new text ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’ as inspiration to create some beautiful winter inspired artwork. We used our art to form creative expanded noun phrases to describe the wintery wonderland of the story. In a build up to writing an impressive 5-part narrative, we carefully planned our own stories using story mountains and made detailed comic strips to help sequence our narratives.

Next week, we will continue ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’ and complete our narratives.

Maths

In Maths this week we continued our learning on Measurement, focussing on mass (g/kg). We began by practising our practical measuring skills by weighing different weights using scales. Next, we began converting measurements with the knowledge that 1000g=1kg. We applied our column method skills when adding and subtracting measurements and further developed our knowledge of exchanging.

Next week in Maths we will be continue Measurement, focussing on volume (l/ml).

Fact of the week

Next week, the fact of the week is 3x7=21

Thematic

In the Thematic this week we continued our learning on our topic ‘Feel the Force, See the Light’. We used our knowledge of UV rays to conduct a scientific study into sunglasses. We began by hypothesising what we believed would be the best materials to make our lenses, testing transparent, translucent and opaque materials. We then tested our sunglasses, seeing their effectiveness and helping our eyes cope with bright light. Finally, we made further adjustments and improvements to our glasses and evaluated our designs. In French, we continued our learning on counting to 10 and learnt some French greetings!

Home Learning

To continue to really develop our love of reading, this week we would like children to access Myon at home and read a book of their choice. We would then like them to quiz on this book using AR through Renaissance. Children’s logins are the same for Myon as they are for AR Renaissance. Please ensure you select the correct school before trying to login. Follow the link to access Myon. Sign In - myON®

If you are still struggling to access either service, please speak to your child’s teacher.

Other News

-With the weather getting colder, please ensure your child comes to school with a coat each day.

-We will now be completing regular times tables quizzes. This term we are focussing on our 5, 10 and 3 times tables. Please be sure to practise with your child at home, another great way for them to practise is to play ‘Jamming’ on TTRS and ensure 2s, 5s and 10s have been selected. If your child is beginning to find this easy, try adding in 3s! It would also be helpful for your children to begin playing Garage more regularly.

- Year 3 children should be reading 4x weekly. Please ensure you are reading with your child as much as possible to support them in their reading progress and make a note of this in their Reading Record.

Christmas Fair

On Wednesday 11th December, we will be holding our School Christmas Fair. This will run from 3.15pm-4.30pm, with a Christmas sing along led by our school choir, which will be at 4pm. Stalls will include a Christmas raffle, tombola, hot food and drinks, guess the sweets in the stocking, splat the sprout, crack the code and many more. This event will take place on the school field (weather permitting) so wrap up warm.

This year the Christmas raffle will work in a slightly different way. We have some big cash prizes, with first prize being £100 and second prize being £50. We will send home a book of tickets. We ask you return any ticket stubs you wish to buy, with the correct money. We also ask you send back any unbought tickets. There will also be tickets available to purchase on the day.

In order to run some of the stalls, we do need to ask for some donations. We are aware of the financial pressures on families at this time of year, so all donations are of course voluntary, and we are grateful for any received. We ask for all donations to come into school on Tuesday 10th December.

We will be running a ‘Take home a Teddy’ stall. If you have any good quality, unwanted cuddly toys please send them into school on Tuesday 10th December to be used on this stall.

We will also be running a Tombola stall. We ask that you send in a bottle of drink for this. Again, we ask that his is sent into school on Tuesday 10th December

Lastly, we will also be running our traditional ‘White Bag’ stall. All children will bring home a white bag on Friday 29th November. We ask that your child decorates the bag, and you pop a small gift inside (sweets, notepad, pens, small toy etc). Can this also be returned to school on Tuesday 10th December.

If you wish to have a stall to sell gifts, then we will also be selling pitches for £15. Contact Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk if you wish to rent a pitch.
