We have had another wonderful week in Year 2! As we enter Advent, those cheeky elves have been causing quite a bit of mischief in our classrooms, bringing smiles and laughter to our days.
The children continue to work hard, and I must say, they have truly blown us away with their fantastic nativity practices! Their enthusiasm and dedication are a joy to witness. Even during this exciting time of year, We are pleased to report that the children are doing a marvellous job of maintaining high standards and following the Chilton rules.
English
We have been diligently focusing on our sounds and red words, and I must say, the children have truly been impressing us with their enthusiasm and effort. It’s heartening to see their excitement as they master each sound and learn new words. Encouraging them to practice at home can help reinforce their progress, so feel free to incorporate some fun sound games during your time together!
Inspired by the story 'Stick Man', the children have come up with some amazing writing ideas that truly showcase their creativity. We embarked on an imaginative journey where we transformed ourselves into the character of Stick Man, allowing us to write in the first person. This approach enabled the children to fully explore Stick Man’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions throughout his various adventures.
I must say, I was absolutely blown away by the fantastic writing that emerged from this week! The children demonstrated not only their developing writing skills but also an incredible enthusiasm for expressing what Stick Man may be feeling in each situation he encounters. Their creativity knows no bounds, and it’s a joy to witness their engagement and passion for storytelling.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Some children have been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
Our focus has been on statistics, a concept that can be quite challenging but incredibly rewarding. The children have been exploring various types of charts, and it has been wonderful to see them engage with these tools to represent data. They particularly enjoyed creating graphs as a class; it was a delightful experience witnessing their enthusiasm!
Looking ahead to next week, we will shift our focus to an equally important topic: money. We will be discussing currency, value, and how to manage money effectively. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop practical skills that they can use in their daily lives.
Thematic
This week we have had a wrap up of our learning on the Great Fire of London. The children have shown an incredible enthusiasm for this topic, and it has been wonderful to witness their curiosity and eagerness to delve deeper into this significant event in history.
Throughout our lessons, we explored what transpired after the Great Fire and challenged ourselves with a quiz to assess our understanding. I must say, their hard work and dedication have truly paid off, and we could not be prouder of their achievements. One of the highlights of the week was when we all “teleported” ourselves back to 1666 to write imaginative letters to our loved ones, recounting the harrowing events of the fire. The children were so inspired that they could have written for hours, expressing all the knowledge they had gathered!
Looking ahead to next week, we have an exciting project planned where we will use our knowledge of the Great Fire of London to design and build a new bridge! This will provide the children with a practical application of their learning and encourage their creativity.
Love to Learn
This week we have learnt all about graphs and charts. Can you collect some data (different flowers on a walk, different animals on a drive, different colours of Lego pieces) and present the data in a chart!
Get creative and have fun!
Christmas fair
On Wednesday 11th December, we will be holding our School Christmas Fair. This will run from 3.15pm-4.30pm, with a Christmas sing along led by our school choir, which will be at 4pm. Stalls will include a Christmas raffle, tombola, hot food and drinks, guess the sweets in the stocking, splat the sprout, crack the code and many more. This event will take place on the school field (weather permitting) so wrap up warm.
This year the Christmas raffle will work in a slightly different way. We have some big cash prizes, with first prize being £100 and second prize being £50. We will send home a book of tickets. We ask you return any ticket stubs you wish to buy, with the correct money. We also ask you send back any unbought tickets. There will also be tickets available to purchase on the day.
In order to run some of the stalls, we do need to ask for some donations. We are aware of the financial pressures on families at this time of year, so all donations are of course voluntary, and we are grateful for any received. We ask for all donations to come into school on Tuesday 10th December.
We will be running a ‘Take home a Teddy’ stall. If you have any good quality, unwanted cuddly toys please send them into school on Tuesday 10th December to be used on this stall.
We will also be running a Tombola stall. We ask that you send in a bottle of drink for this. Again, we ask that his is sent into school on Tuesday 10th December
Lastly, we will also be running our traditional ‘White Bag’ stall. All children will bring home a white bag on Friday 29th November. We ask that your child decorates the bag, and you pop a small gift inside (sweets, notepad, pens, small toy etc). Can this also be returned to school on Tuesday 10th December.
If you wish to have a stall to sell gifts, then we will also be selling pitches for £15. Contact Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk if you wish to rent a pitch.
