One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 7.2.25

What a marvellous week we have had! Well done to all children who have worked so hard and produced wonderful learning.

Number Day

We had a wonderful day celebrating the NSPCC Number Day. The children looked fabulous in their outfits and we have had a great time completing lots of maths activities throughout the day. We started the day by reading Equal Shmequal and thought about how to make things fair and balanced. This followed on brilliantly from our maths learning this week. We also read 1 is a snail, 10 is a crab. We completed some problem solving activities based on this book which was great fun!

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been learning about mass. We used the words heavier, heaviest, lightest and lighter to compare and order the mass of objects. We used balance scales to measure the mass of different classroom objects using cubes (e.g. we found out that a glue stick has the same mass as 7 cubes). At the end of the week, we solved some word problems about mass using addition and subtraction.

Next week, we will be learning what volume and capacity. We will be comparing and ordering the volume in different containers.

Fact of the week

Our fact of the week this week is:

5+5=10

10-5=5

Thematic

This week, we have had a lot of fun in our afternoon lessons. We started the week by looking at and recording the results of our science experiment which we set this up a few weeks ago in class. We had 3 pieces of bread. One piece we touched without washing our hands, one piece we touched after washing our hands with just water and one piece we touched after washing our hands with water and soap. The piece of bread with the most mould was the one where we did not wash our hands at all! It looked disgusting!

We concluded our thematic learning for this term by taking part in our end of unit quiz and discussing our learning with Year 3 children who had also completed a unit featuring healthy eating. This was a lot of fun!

Next week, we will be completing our RE learning for this term which will look at books which are special to us and about special books of different religions.

Reading

Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Love to Learn

In the first week back of Term 4, we will be spending time looking at children’s favourite books. We will be encouraging their oracy skills. To prepare for this, please speak at home about what your child’s favourite book is and why, what is their favourite part of the book, who the characters are etc. We ask that children bring in their book (or email us a picture of the book if you don’t want books being brought into school) on the following days:

Tuesday 25th February - Red Romans

Wednesday 26th February - Blue Vikings

Thursday 27th February - Yellow Saxons

Friday 28th February - Green Normans

Children can write their thoughts in their Love to Learn books or just discuss this with you at home.

Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.
