We have had another wonderful week in Year 1!
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Maths
This week in maths, we have been learning about length and measuring the length/height of objects using non-standard units (cubes). We learned that there must be a starting point to measure the length/height of objects. We also used our skills of adding and finding the difference with lengths.
Next week, we will be learning about 2D shapes and identifying and continuing repeating patterns.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week is:
5+5=10 (linking to doubles)
We will also look at the inverse of this fact (10-5=5)
Next week, we will be consolidating our learning of all the doubles we have learned this term (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5).
Next week in maths, we will be looking at the value of coins up to 50p, learning to exchange money and finding amounts in different ways.
Thematic
This week, we have been learning about the United Kingdom, where this is in the world and the countries which make up the UK. We have also learned that each of these countries have a capital city and have learned the names of these. We learned that each UK country has a flag and, using the food provided by you (thank you so much!), we explored the foods traditionally eaten in each of the 4 countries making up the UK. At the end of the week, we learned how to use a globe, located the UK on the globe as well as the equator, North Pole and South Pole and learned about hot and cold countries.
Next week, we will be looking at the weather we typically get in our country, learn about the different weather symbols and learn about Anders Celsius and Daniel Fahrenheit.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

Love to Learn
Thank you so much for all the delicious food which you sent in this week! The children loved sampling the different foods.
This week, we would like children to use non-standard units to measure the length of objects around the house (e.g. use dried pasta). You could record in a table:

Other news
Sports Slam (our additional PE lesson) is on a Monday. This is where the children will refine a skill each term, for this term our skill is jumping. Please can the children wear trainers and their normal school uniform on this day.
PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.
Read at 3 is on every Friday at 3pm this is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for 15 minutes. This will happen every Friday this term.
Christmas Fair
On Wednesday 11th December, we will be holding our School Christmas Fair. This will run from 3.15pm-4.30pm, with a Christmas sing along led by our school choir, which will be at 4pm. Stalls will include a Christmas raffle, tombola, hot food and drinks, guess the sweets in the stocking, splat the sprout, crack the code and many more. This event will take place on the school field (weather permitting) so wrap up warm.
This year the Christmas raffle will work in a slightly different way. We have some big cash prizes, with first prize being £100 and second prize being £50. We will send home a book of tickets. We ask you return any ticket stubs you wish to buy, with the correct money. We also ask you send back any unbought tickets. There will also be tickets available to purchase on the day.
In order to run some of the stalls, we do need to ask for some donations. We are aware of the financial pressures on families at this time of year, so all donations are of course voluntary, and we are grateful for any received. We ask for all donations to come into school on Tuesday 10th December.
We will be running a ‘Take home a Teddy’ stall. If you have any good quality, unwanted cuddly toys please send them into school on Tuesday 10th December to be used on this stall.
We will also be running a Tombola stall. We ask that you send in a bottle of drink for this. Again, we ask that his is sent into school on Tuesday 10th December.
Lastly, we will also be running our traditional ‘White Bag’ stall. All children will bring home a white bag on Friday 29th November. We ask that your child decorates the bag, and you pop a small gift inside (sweets, notepad, pens, small toy etc). Can this also be returned to school on Tuesday 10th December.
If you wish to have a stall to sell gifts, then we will also be selling pitches for £15. Contact Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk if you wish to rent a pitch.

16th December – Year 1 Nativity at 9am
17th December – Reception, year 1 and year 2 Christmas party day (party clothes to be worn)
20th December – Christmas jumper day (children can wear usual school uniform with a Christmas jumper)
20th December – School Christmas dinner
20th December – Last day of school; School finishes at 2pm; No after school club on this day
