One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 24.1.25

We have had such a wonderful week of learning in Year 1 this week. The children are amazing us everyday with their learning. Well done, Year 1!

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Children will also be completing a writing showpiece each Friday. This week, they have been writing about the importance of exercise and eating the correct amounts of food, linking to our thematic learning.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been learning to use a number line to add and subtract. We had to find the first number in the calculation and circle that on the number line and then either jump forwards (for addition) or backwards (for subtraction) the correct amount of times by looking at the second number in the calculation. Here is a number line to practise this skill at home (see love to learn section):

Next week, we will be learning what inverses are (the inverse of addition is subtraction and vice versa). We will be finding the subtraction calculation having been given the addition calculation e.g. 4+6=10 so 10-6=4.

Fact of the week

Our fact of the week this week is:

3+7=10

7+3=10

Thematic

This week, we have had so much fun in our afternoon lessons. We started the week by learning about different types of foods and how much of certain foods we should eat to keep us healthy. We also learned about exercise and why it is important for humans to exercise and what effect it has on our body. At the end of the week, Chloe from the kitchen spoke to us about the importance of being hygienic around foods when cooking and eating and how we can make sure that we are being hygienic.

Next week, we will be learning that foods can come from animals or plants and will sort different foods into these groups. We will also learn that foods can be peeled, grated or cut and have experience of doing this (with support). They will also be planning and making a healthy dish.

Reading

Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Love to Learn

Thank you so much to the children/families for completing their love to learn so far in Term 2.

This week, we would like the children to practise adding and subtracting on a number line:

If the calculation is 6+4, the children need to find the 6 and jump forwards for 4 jumps (to land on 10). If the calculation is 16-3, they need to find 16 and make 3 jumps backwards to land on 13. You could create your own large number line outside with chalk on the floor and children actually jump forwards and backwards!

Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!

Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.
