Maths
This week in maths, we have been learning place value, making ten and counting on from ten and learning to regroup ten ones into one ten.
At the beginning of the week, we used tens frames to count objects into groups of 10. We learnt that when our tens frame is full, we have 10. We found that when we are counting out a number more than 10, we can count on from 10. We learnt that this is an important skill when counting large amounts of objects so that we do not make mistakes.
Then, with our learning partners, we had to pick a number card from our table. We then had to make this with ones in base ten and see if we could regroup the ten, to make it easier for us to count! We did this with bigger trickier numbers, take a look at how well we did!
Next week, we will be looking at adding and subtracting using number line.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week is:
2+8=10
8+2=10
10-2=8
10-8=2
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Thematic
This week we started our unit I Care About Me and we were scientists! This week, we learnt about basic parts and functions of the human body, including: head, face, hair, teeth, neck, arms, elbows, legs and knees. After this, we worked in groups to draw around the outside of our friend’s bodies and label the parts. We even challenged ourselves to find wrists and ankles too!
On Thursday we explored and discussed why we have our senses. For example, what is the purpose of our hands? Why do we need a sense of smell? We learnt that we use our hands to help us look after ourselves and others. We discovered that we have a sense of smell to warn us of danger and when we have a cold our taste and smell can be affected. We then did a sense experiment by smelling certain items to see if we could guess what they were. We listened to a variety of music. Next, we created colourful pictures to see how the colours blended on the coffee filter paper and we then tasted different food to see if it was sweet or sour. We then had to find items that were soft, hard and bumpy and touched the different textures.
Today we had a scientist Mr Howard come in and teach us about a scientist from the past. We learnt about how Edward Jenner was a brilliant scientist because he noticed what was going on in the world around him and asked questions. We learnt the story of how he spotted that milk maids caught cowpox but never died from smallpox and how he used this to create a vaccination to stop the spread of the disease and save thousands of lives! After this, we did an experiment to show how quickly and easily germs can spread! We put glitter on our hands and asked what would happen if we shook hands with somebody else? Many of us correctly predicted that the glitter would spread but we were amazed to see that the glitter could spread as far as 10 people!
Next week we will learn about good hygiene practices around food and will have a special visitor come in to see the children and tell them how they keep good hygiene practices in our kitchen too. We will also be looking at the importance of exercise and looking at right amounts of healthy and unhealthy foods.
Love to Learn
Thank you so much to the children/families for completing their love to learn tasks in Term 2.
This week, we would like the children to go on a senses walk with you and draw a picture or label a photo of what they can see, hear, smell, taste and touch, as long as it is safe to do so. E.g. picnic in the park, listening to birds chirping, smelling freshly cut grass, seeing the dogs going for a walk and touching the slide as I go down.
Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!
Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.
Show and Tell
A reminder that children should not be bringing any toys into school as these can get easily broken or lost. If children would like to do show and tell, please email a picture of the show and tell to class teacher(s) and we can use this when the children share with the class. Please could all parents ensure that children are not bringing toys etc. in from home.
Wellington Boots
The children have loved having access to the top field and the forest school area. The children have said they particularly like den building in the forest school and going on the trim trail. Just a reminder if they would like to use this area, they need to wear wellington boots. Please can these be kept in the crates outside Team Cornflower in a named carrier bag. Other footwear (e.g. old trainers, other types of boots etc. are not permitted).
Additionally, if you have any wellington boots that no longer fit and you would not mind donating to the school, we would greatly appreciate any wellington boots.
Other news
Children are no longer required to wear trainers into school on a Monday.
PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.
Read at 3 is on every Friday at 3pm this is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for 15 minutes. This will happen every Friday this term apart from February 14th as it will be the school disco.
