One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 14.2.25

What a fantastic final week we have had in term 3. Take a look at what we have been up to!

Maths

This week in maths, we have been learning about capacity! We learnt what volume and capacity mean and we learnt the key vocabulary full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty. We then had to use these words to compare the volume of liquid in containers. Our challenge was having containers of different shapes and work out how to compare the volume. Later in the week, we continued to learn about volume and capacity means. We had to use the key vocabulary we learnt (full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty) to order the volume of liquids in containers. Our challenge was that we had different shaped containers and had to work out how to order the volume.

Next term, we will be looking at geometry! We will look at describing position, direction and movement including forwards, backwards, left and right.

Fact of the week

Our fact of the week this week is:

2+3=5

3+2=5

5-2=3

5-3=2

Read, Write Inc.

This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.

Reading

Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!

Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.

Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!

There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.

If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

RE

This week we have looked at special books from Christian, Jewish and Muslim religions. We looked at the Bible, Torah and Qu’ran. We discussed the importance of how these special books are looked after and that religious books need to be treated with respect.

Next term we will begin our week looking at British Values and the 9 characteristics.

Online safety Day

Tuesday was internet safety day where we discussed how to stay safe online and how we should protect personal information. We completed some activities to help us sort behaviours which are safe or unsafe online.

Computing Day

On Monday Team we learnt about robots! We discussed what robots are and their uses. We then looked at directions forwards, backwards, left and right. As a class we had to sequence commands to direct our teachers around the classroom safely. We then had a go at directing our partners using a set sequence. We learnt about debugging along the way when making an error in our commands.

Later in the day, we looked at making a character on Scratch Jnr to complete an algorithm that we created. We had to first turn the Ipads on, then open the app and create a new project. We found we had to put a green flag first and then put the directions in by pressing the correct button we needed. As a challenge we had a snake on the screen that we had to get to, we had to debug and fix some mistakes along the way.

Love to Learn

Thank you so much to the children/families for completing their love to learn tasks in Term 3.

In the first week back of Term 4, we will be spending time looking at children’s favourite books. We will be encouraging their oracy skills. To prepare for this, please speak at home about what your child’s favourite book is and why, what is their favourite part of the book, who the characters are etc. We ask that children bring in their book (or email us a picture of the book if you don’t want books being brought into school) on the following days:

Tuesday 25th February - Red Romans

Wednesday 26th February - Blue Vikings

Thursday 27th February - Yellow Saxons

Friday 28th February - Green Normans

Children can write their thoughts in their Love to Learn books or just discuss this with you at home.

Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.

Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!

Show and Tell

A reminder that children should not be bringing any toys into school as these can get easily broken or lost. If children would like to do show and tell, please email a picture of the show and tell to class teacher(s) and we can use this when the children share with the class. Please could all parents ensure that children are not bringing toys etc in from home.

Wellie Boots

The children have loved having access to the top field and the forest school area. The children have said they particularly like den building in the forest school and going on the trim trail. Just a reminder if they would like to use this area, they need to wear wellie boots. Please can these be kept in the crates outside Team Cornflower in a named carrier bag. Other footwear (e.g. old trainers, other types of boots etc are not permitted).

Additionally, if you have any wellie boots that no longer fit and you would not mind donating to the school we would greatly appreciate any wellie boots.

Other news

Children are no longer required to wear trainers into school on a Monday.

PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.

Next tern our Read at 3 will continue every Friday at 3pm this is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for 15 minutes
