Weekly News! 10.1.25
Happy New Year! We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas. The children have returned to school with lots of enthusiasm and positivity. It is going to be a great term in Year 1!
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Maths
This week in maths, we have been learning to sequence events in the correct order using words like first, then, next. We have also been learning to tell the time to o’clock. We learned that when the big hand (minute hand) is at the top of the clock, it is o’clock and the short hand tells us what hour it is.
Next week, we will be looking at place value and learning to regroup ten ones into one ten. We will also be making ten and counting on from ten to make counting larger groups of objects easier.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week this week and next week is:
1+9=10
9+1=10
10-1=9
10-9=1
PSHE
This week, the whole school have been completing our PSHE unit ‘Champions of Courage’ in our afternoon sessions. Our Champion was Henri Matisse. We looked at the artwork he produced before he was poorly and learned how he continued to produce artwork after he was poorly but that these works changed.
Next week, we will be starting our new thematic unit: I Care About Me. We will look at the human body, name the main body parts and learn about the 5 senses.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Love to Learn
Thank you so much to the children/families for completing their love to learn tasks in Term 2.
This week, we would like the children to create a diary over one day at the weekend. They need to record the time (only o’clock times) and record what they were doing at that time (in pictures/words/photographs) e.g.
7 o’clock |
Woke up |
9 o’clock |
Watched TV |
11 o’clock |
Play at the park |
1 o’clock |
lunch |
4 o’clock |
Visited nan |
6 o’clock |
Bath |
Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!
Love to Learn books need to be returned on Wednesday each week.
Show and Tell
A reminder that children should not be bringing any toys into school as these can get easily broken or lost. If children would like to do show and tell, please email a picture of the show and tell to class teacher(s) and we can use this when the children share with the class. Please could all parents ensure that children are not bringing toys etc in from home.
Wellie Boots
As you will know from Mr McAuley, children in Year 1 will start having the option to use forest school at lunchtimes. they are only allowed to use this area if they have wellie boots in school. These need to be brought in and kept in children's lockers (in a carrier bag to prevent other things getting muddy) Other footwear (e.g. old trainers, other types of boots etc are not permitted).
Other news
Children are no longer required to wear trainers into school on a Monday.
PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.
Read at 3 is on every Friday at 3pm this is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for 15 minutes. This will happen every Friday this term.
