Weekly News! 6.12.24
What a great week we have had in Year 1! Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊
Maths
This week we looked at 2D shape! We learnt that a square and an oblong are a type of rectangle as a rectangle is a 2D shape with 4 straight sides which meet at 90 degree angle. We discussed what a circle, oval, square, oblong, triangle, pentagon and hexagon looked like and we thought about where we see these shapes in our environment. Then we went on a shape hunt in the classroom with our partners!
Later in the week, we took part in a carousel of activities. We had a go at making 2D shapes from lollysticks, playdough, thinking about whether the shape has straight or curved sides as well as the number of sides it has. We also used shapes to make pictures and/or patterns. To the end the week we looked at patterns, the children were so good at this, well done Year 1!
Next week in maths the children will be looking at pictograms!
Fact of the week

Next week our FOTW are:
Recapping all our Facts of the Week this term.
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. We have met our new RWI teachers. We have been reviewing our sounds and working so hard phonetically reading words. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come in to the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Thematic
This week continued our new thematic learning Thunderbolts and lightning we looked at at live weather in the capital cities of the United Kingdom and how the weather can affect our lives. We then looked at the weather in The Netherlands, France and Belgium. Using this knowledge, we looked at what the weather was like today and drew pictures of the weather in the capital cities of the UK and discussed what we would wear in each city based on the weather.
Today, we learnt about Anders Celsius and Daniel Fahrenheit. We discussed they were both scientists from the past that developed tools that we still use today to help predict the weather. We then looked at the thermometer and temperature scale and linked this to our weather diary.
Next week we will have our end of unit quiz and we will create our very own weather reports!
Christmas Fair
On Wednesday 11th December, we will be holding our School Christmas Fair. This will run from 3.15pm-4.30pm, with a Christmas sing along led by our school choir, which will be at 4pm. Stalls will include a Christmas raffle, tombola, hot food and drinks, guess the sweets in the stocking, splat the sprout, crack the code and many more. This event will take place on the school field (weather permitting) so wrap up warm.
This year the Christmas raffle will work in a slightly different way. We have some big cash prizes, with first prize being £100 and second prize being £50. We will send home a book of tickets. We ask you return any ticket stubs you wish to buy, with the correct money. We also ask you send back any unbought tickets. There will also be tickets available to purchase on the day.
In order to run some of the stalls, we do need to ask for some donations. We are aware of the financial pressures on families at this time of year, so all donations are of course voluntary, and we are grateful for any received. We ask for all donations to come into school on Tuesday 10th December.
We will be running a ‘Take home a Teddy’ stall. If you have any good quality, unwanted cuddly toys please send them into school on Tuesday 10th December to be used on this stall.
We will also be running a Tombola stall. We ask that you send in a bottle of drink for this. Again, we ask that his is sent into school on Tuesday 10th December.
Lastly, we will also be running our traditional ‘White Bag’ stall. All children will bring home a white bag on Friday 29th November. We ask that your child decorates the bag, and you pop a small gift inside (sweets, notepad, pens, small toy etc). Can this also be returned to school on Tuesday 10th December.
If you wish to have a stall to sell gifts, then we will also be selling pitches for £15. Contact Mrs Cheshire at hannah.cheshire@chiltonprimary.co.uk if you wish to rent a pitch
