One Childhood, One Chance

Pyramids, Pharaohs, Tombs and Treasure for Chilton’s Explorers

Young explorers at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate are delving into the history and mystery of Ancient Egypt.

The Year 4 group is unearthing a variety of information as they piece together the creation and development of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

Their learning encompasses a range of skills to help them understand what made Ancient Egypt tick and why it has remained such a rich and interesting subject centuries later.

They are discovering the creation and intent behind the building of the majestic pyramids; identifying and locating Egyptian landmarks using co-ordinates and understanding the importance of the River Nile to its people and how it is utilised by society today.

As part of their topic called Walk Like An Egyptian the children are also learning about pharaohs such as Nefertiti, Cleopatra, Khufu, Rameses and Tutankhamun, the use of hieroglyphs and the Egyptian’s significant contribution to art and architecture.

They are investigating how hunter gatherer people evolve into food-providing farmers that in turn gave people time to develop reading and writing, painting, carving statues, looking at the stars in the night sky, worshipping gods, and inventing sums and numbers.

A visit to Maidstone Museum’s exhibition about the civilisation, mummifying a tomato, creating their own pyramids and painting Egyptian gods are also part of their exciting journey into history.

The topic will conclude with an exhibition for parents that will display artefacts made by Year 4 including fact files, models, masks and an instructional video how to mummify a dead body.

Deputy Head of School Hannah Cheshire said: “This a fascinating topic jam-packed with discovery. It is really engaging our pupils and it is firing their imaginations.

“They are keenly observing how Ancient Egypt made significant contributions to art and architecture, creating intricate sculptures, paintings, jewellery, and constructing impressive temples and monuments.

“The children are learning about key figures from Ancient Egypt and will be able to discuss key cultural aspects from this time period, such as art, artefacts and architecture. They will be able to compare what life was like in the Egyptian culture, compared to a Western culture, such as that found in England.

“We work hard to ensure learning is memorable, hands on and engaging and it is rewarding to see how knowledgeable our Year 4 children are becoming about this important civilisation is the development of our world.”
