One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 03/11/2023

What a fantastic first week of Term 2 we have had in Year 3! Here is what we have been up to.

English

This week we have began our new class text, The Green Ship. We began by looked at the incredible images used by the author, Quentin Blake, and how they helped to tell the story. We then produced some brilliant art work of the ship and the forest setting, before using ambitious adjectives to describe them.

Next week we will be continuing our learning on writing setting descriptions by using compound sentences to describe the ship during the storm. We will also finish reading the book and complete the AR quiz.

Maths

In maths we have been learning how to find fractions of shapes, objects and amounts. We were so impressed with the children's resilience and confidence in this. We started the week by making fraction sharks to show fractions of different shapes. We then used sharing circles, biscuits and bar models to find fractions of amounts.

Next week, we will be finding equivalent fractions of halves using shapes, amounts and fraction wall.

Our fact of the week is 3x3=9

Thematic curriculum

This week we have begun our exciting new topic 'Feel the Force, See the Light'. For our Hook, we explored a range of materials, such as magnets, torches, blindfolds and mirrors. We had lots of amazing discussions around magnetism. We then moved on to investigate how far a counter could travel on different surfaces. We identified that objects travel further on smoother surfaces and therefore, use less force to travel.

Next week we will be moving on to investigate magnetism. We will be looking at a range of magnets and identifying magnetic materials.

Love to Learn

For Home Learning this week, we have set a book on Magnets on My On. Please could you read this and complete the quiz. If you have any problems accessing this, please let your child's class teacher know.

We would also like the children to practice these spellings for a test next Thursday.
