Maths
This week in maths, we have been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock. We learnt the difference between the minute hand and the hour hand and that the numbers around the clock refer to hours. We even looked at clock that used roman numerals to indicate the hours.
We looked at identifying times that include o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to. Our learning then took us to identifying times at 5 minute intervals such as 5 past, 20 past and 10 to.
On our last day of time, we played time dominos. Our task was to match an analogue clock face to the written time.
English
Our focus in English was to use fronted adverbials in out writing. We were able to add fronted adverbials onto the beginning of our sentences such as:
As quick as a flash, Petrified, Almost unbelievably and The very next day.
We finished our wonderful book, The Green Ship. Our favourite part was when the children braved a storm that battered the ship. We used this as inspiration to write a great narrative of our own. We used our fronted adverbials to tell a story of how the green ship ended up at sea and got caught in a terrible, storm. This vivid setting really helped to produce some wonderful writing and creative ways of using adverbial phrases.
Topic
In Topic we have looked at the island of New Zealand and their culture and customs. We have learnt their traditional greeting called the hungi and their warrior dance called the haka. We made posters and wrote an informational piece all about New Zealand and the cultures of the Maori.
