Year 3 Weekly News - 15.10.21
What have we been up to this week?
English
This week the children have been learning to begin their sentences with fronted adverbials. A fronted adverbial is a phrase or word that goes at the beginning of a sentence to describe the action that comes after it. We have finished reading our text called The Green Ship. The children's writing has been based on scenes from the book such as an action scene where the characters are at sea in a storm. Rather than writing 'Lightning flashed across the gloomy, dark sky', the children have learnt to start with a fronted adverbial e.g. 'In the blink of an eye, lightning flashed across the gloomy, dark sky'.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been learning to tell the time. Some of the children are working on o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times and some of us have moved onto every 5 minute interval around the clock e.g. 25 minutes past 6 or ten minutes to 1. We began by telling the time on analogue clocks (round clocks with hands) and then moved on to digital clocks. Please take every opportunity to read the time on clocks at home and out and about, especially analogue clocks as the children are much less used to seeing these clocks these days; everything is digital. If you don't have an analogue clock in you house, consider getting one. Many thanks!
Topic
This week we have been undertaken some art learning. The children have been finding out about sculptures and have given their opinions on various sculptures and tried to explain why they feel that way. We then found out about the Easter Island statues, sketched them and then made them out of clay. The children have made some brilliant sculptures! Here we are making them...
Love to Learn challenges
This week, the children have Maths and English challenges.
For maths, we would like you to practice telling the time. Record what you do during one of the days over the weekend and write down the time that you do each thing e.g. you get up at half past 7, go to the park at 20 minutes past 11 etc. Please record at least 5 things you do, but you can record more events of your day if you wish. If you could record the times in digital and analogue times, that would be even better! You could draw pictures or take photos of what you do at each time.
For English, choose some of the fronted adverbials below and write 5 sentences that start with them. Don't forget your comma after the fronted adverbial. You could always choose some of your own that you can remember from this week instead of using the ones below. You can write your sentences about the Green Ship or they can be about anything you like.
Loudly, ....
All of a sudden, ...
Unexpectedly, .....
Without warning, ....
In the distance, ....
Inside the cage, ....
Nervously, ....
Totally exhausted, ....
Messages
As previously mentioned in this blog, the children are invited to come to school dressed as an Island Explorer for the end point of our Island Life topic. This will be on Thursday 21st October. We are looking forward to seeing all of the Year 3 explorers!
The following day, on Friday 22nd October, the children may come to school in non-school uniform for a small donation to the Chilton Fundraisers fund.
Please continue to take the Accelerated Reading quizzes after your child has read each of their reading books. See your child's teacher for more information.
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
