Weekly News! w/b 2.5.22
Another fantastic week in Year 1! Here is what we have been learning about…
Read, Write Inc.
We have been working really hard on our sounds again this week, looking at and spotting special friends in words. We’re really getting the hang of this now but again, any practice on those would be greatly appreciated!
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been looking at the inverse of equations. For example, 6 + 3 = 9 but if we flip it, 9 – 6 = 3. We then went on to look at fact families where we found all the different variations we could have of it! This was a challenge but we put in some really good effort and started to understand it towards the end of the week!
Topic
In Topic, we’ve continued with our theme on ‘the toy story’. We looked at a variety of materials that toys could be made of, like metal, wood, plastic and discussed what they feel like. We learnt about whether materials were flexible, hard, soft or transparent. We then went on to explore how different materials react with water and whether we could make bath toys out of them. We tried paper, fabric, wood, plastic and others but found that the best materials to make our bath toys out of would be wood or plastic. We designed these creations in our books and labelled them.
PSHE
Inspired by how much we like ‘Along came a different’ we discussed whether our hobbies and interests made us different from one another. We had some fantastic discussions and some really creative and interesting answers! We went back to our self-portraits and improved them by making the brighter and bolder. We also gave ourselves funky fun backgrounds ready for our self-portraits to be displayed!
Next week
In Maths… We will continue to look at ‘Addition and subtraction’ We will be learning to...
To solve missing number problems
And to solve one step word problems with a part part whole.
In RWI… we will be continuing to practise our sounds, use punctuation, practise our writing and learn the red words.
In Topic… we will be learning about toys from the past and doing our own research about it.
We will also be comparing current toys to ones from the past and looking at how they are similar and different.
Love 2 Learn
This week, we would love for you to create some number families! For example: 2, 5, 3... 2+3=5 3+2=5 5-3=2 5-2=3.
