One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 4th February

Another fantastic week in Reception this week. The children had a wonderful time on number day! Thank you so much for all your efforts in creating their wonderful outfits; they all looked amazing!

Phonics

In Read, Write Inc this week, we have continued to learn new sounds and practise reading and writing words and sentences using our phonic knowledge. More of the children have started to learning their set two sounds, so far covering ay, ee, igh, oo,  and ar. As their writing task this week, the children continued to work on writing simple sentences to describe. This week, describing the Evil Pea from Supertato. We have discussed why it is important to leave a small space between each word and when we need to use full stops. Some children even started to use exclamation marks, having seen them in the books we have been reading at school.

Maths

In maths this week, we have been focusing on subtraction. We have learnt the words subtract, take away, leaves and equals. We started the week using practical resources, like cubes and counters; taking objects away and counting how many we had left. Following this, we had pictures of objects and were subtracting by crossing out the pictures and counting how many remained. We know how to read a subtraction calculation and can use objects to find the answers to these and record them. If you want to help with this at home, when the children are eating their dinner they could count how many carrots or peas then have. You could ask them how many there will be uf they ate three more.

Topic

In Topic this week, we have been reading the story Michael Recycle. In the story, Michael comes to help save a very polluted town. We discussed what recycling was and why it is so important. We went around the school on a litter pick. We discussed the materials that they rubbish we collected were made off and sorted them into which coloured bin we would recycle them into.

Next week

Next week, we will be learning about Lunar New Year, including tasting some lovely Chinese food (we are all looking forward to this). If there is any of the food that you do not wish your child to taste, please let your class teacher know. In Maths, we will be learning about capacity, using the vocabulary full, half full and empty.

Love to learn challenge: February Half Term

Well done and thank you so much for your amazing Superhero designs and creations – they were amazing!

At the start of next term our topic will be space!  Your challenge over half term is to find out about space. This can be any aspect of space – please follow your child’s interests.  You could look in an information book, read stories set in space, look on the Internet, ask a grown up and so on.  Your child can draw pictures in their Love to Learn book or stick in pictures from the Internet.  They could make a model, a collage or paint a picture.  Please return the Love to Learn challenges by Wednesday 23rd February so that we can use them at the start of our topic. We would love to put some of them up on display too!

Dress to Express

On Friday 11th February, in support of children's mental health day, we are asking the children to wear bright colours to school, as part of 'Dress to Express day'.

This day is also the final day of term 2. We return to school on Tuesday 22nd February at the usual time.
