This week was a big week for our butterflies. They finally emerged from the chrysalis, and we set them free Friday afternoon. This has been fascinating for the children to watch!

Maths:

In maths, this week we have learned about grouping and sharing. When grouping we were given a group of objects and had to put them into groups of a given amount. When sharing, we were given a group of objects and had to share them out fairly between a given number of people. When sharing we learnt to give everyone one object each first; then give everyone a second object and to keep on going until we had shared all the objects out.

You could reinforce this at home when sharing out treats with the family.

English:

In English, we continued to learn our set 1 digraphs and our set 2 sounds. We played lots of oral blending games and practised reading and writing simple c.v.c words. In our Topic writing, some of us wrote sentences about the life cycle of a butterfly and some of us labelled a diagram of the life cycle of a butterfly. We are getting really confident using out sounds to have a go at writing increasingly challenging words.

On Monday, all the children will come home with a copy of the Reception red words. These are tricky words that we cannot sound out and therefore, have to learn the whole word by sight. There will be a list of games you can play with your child to help them learn these words. It would be great if you could support your child with learning to read these words at home.

Topic:

In our topic learning, we focused on the life cycle of the butterfly. We read the classic book 'The very hungry caterpillar'. We learned about all the transitions the butterflies go through and created some beautiful butterfly pictures, just like those Eric Carle drew in the book. We have really loved watching our eggs turn from caterpillars into butterflies!
