Weekly News! 22.11.24
We have had another fun packed week in reception this week. If you haven’t already heard all about it, read on!
RWI
This week in RWI we have continued to learn and review set 1 sounds. Some groups are beginning to learn special friends. These are when a sound has two or more letters, for example, sh, ch and th. These sounds are trickier to recall, write and read, so lots of practice is needed.
We are becoming so much more confident with our oral blending, which in turn is going to support our reading when we are ready. Thank you for all your support at home with this.
Maths
This week in maths, we compared 2 groups of objects using the vocabulary more, fewer and the same as. We started by exploring more, we looked at numbers on the number line and learnt that when a number is further along, this means there are more. We compared 2 groups of objects and had to say which had more. After this we explored fewer. When a number was earlier on the number line we say it is fewer. Later in the week, we explored groups which are the same. That is when each group has the same amount. When comparing groups, we had to put our answers into sentences. For example we might say 6 is more than 3, 5 is fewer than 8, 7 is the same as 7.
Next week in maths, we will be learning the 2D shape names and properties, recapping prepositional language and combining these to create pictures.
Thematic
This week we learnt about the Hindu festival Diwali. We read the story of Rama and Sita and learnt how the evil king Ravana kidnapped Sita. In the end, Sita is saved by Rama and it is celebrated that good triumphs over evil, light triumphs over darkness. As part of the festival, Diva lamps are used to represent light and guide Rama and Sita home. We created our own diva lamps using clay and then decorated them. We also learnt a Diwali dance and performed it as a class.
As a celebration of our learning, at the end of the week we made our own indoor bonfire and toasted marshmallows!
Next week in thematic, we will begin our Transport topic.
Important information
Please check your child’s bag this week for information regarding the reception nativity. Your child will either be a rocker, a Christmas tree or a narrator and will need to learn lines.
A text was sent out this week regarding the Naughty Bus trip. This will be reception’s first school trip! We will be taking the school minibuses down to the harbour to observe the different modes of transport, including the boats. It will only be for roughly half an hour for each group, then we will head straight back to school in the minibus. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask your child’s class teacher.
