English
We have been introduced to our new text, 'Floodland', by Marcus Sedgwick. After predicting what we thought would happen, we role-played as the characters Zoe and Natasha. In the story, Zoe abandons Natasha on a flooding Norwich, which is becoming an island and so we used conscience corridor to discuss whether she had made the right decision or not. We wrote a letter from Zoe to Natasha explaining why she left.
Maths
This week, we have been following on from addition by learning the most effective methods for subtraction. We challenged our fluency skills first before playing subtraction games and solving subtraction problems. On Friday, we focused on our Term 1 reasoning problem-solving skills.
Thematic
It has been fun learning more about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution, which he considered after visiting the Galapagos Islands. We discussed how animals and plants adapt to suit their environments before creating our own imaginary animals, thinking about how they have changed to survive. We also made fossils using PVA glue and a mould. Thank you to everyone who has been able to bring in a fossil.
Love to Learn
If you can, please bring in a (recent) photo of your mum, dad or both. In our thematic learning, we will be looking at inheritance: we will be comparing the similarities and differences in how the offspring (children) take on traits of their parents.
Please learn these spellings for next week. They all include the suffix '-est', meaning 'the most...' This week, we focused on the spelling rules for each. To keep the short vowel sound, double the consonant (big = biggest). Some root words can just have 'est' added to them (smart = smartest). If the word ends in 'e', remove the 'e' before adding 'est' (wide = widest). If the word ends in 'y', change the 'y' for an 'i' before adding 'est' (silly = silliest).

We would also like you to create an engaging poster that highlights next week's fact of the week: 8 x 6 = 48. You can present this any way you wish but we would love to see colour!
