One Childhood, One Chance

28.03.2025 Weekly News!

What a busy but fun week we have had in Year 5. From printing in art to time telling in Maths and from making mechanisms using cams to water-colour paintings of Odysseus. Our learning has been such fun!

English

This week, we have written from different peoples’ viewpoints. Using our class text as inspiration, we developed characters by exploring their thoughts and feelings. Some of us then were challenged to write from an opposing point of view.

Next week, we are going to be writing a short narrative, which will be based on our class text. We will be learning how to develop description and some of us will be learning how to build cohesion between paragraphs.

Maths

This week, we spent finished our learning of rounding decimal numbers. We then moved on to learning how to convert between different units of times, both for fluency and within problem solving.

Next week, we will be learning about co-ordinates. We will be able to locate and plot co-ordinates. Some of us will do this in four quadrants. We will also complete a problem-solving task, in which we will be working backwards to find an answer.

Thematic/RE

This week, we have designed, made and evaluated a moving mechanism that included a cam. We learned how cams work, changing a rotary motion to a linear motion.

Next week, we are completing our printing unit by using natural materials and also having a top up lesson for thematic. In RE, we will be learning about Buddhism by finding out who Buddha was and why he is important to Buddhist today. We will also be looking at the 4 Noble Truths and the 8-fold path, including how Buddhist believe in karma and reincarnation. We will also learn about Buddhist worship and the role of symbols within this.

Love to Learn

Linked to our RE next week, please find out about Buddhism. You can present this in any way you like, models, posters, leaflets or a presentation. We will show this on Wednesday afternoon as a part of our RE lesson.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Isaac, Mrs King and Mr Cook
