28.02.25 Weekly News!

Another busy week here in Year 5 has ended and we are really proud of each and every pupil. Our highlights have been discussing British Values and also learning about how our bodies will change and why they change. We also want to say a BIG well done as Year 5 have been awarded one of our Chilton Hero bears for their maturity and curiosity this week.
English
This week, we have focused on speech writing and oracy. We have all written persuasive speeches to encourage Mr. McAuley to introduce a lesson on our choice. These will be used to enter the Viking Academy Trust public speaking competition. Although all pupils have learned how to write and will perform to their peers, going through to the next rounds are optional.
Next week, we will be reading some Greek myths that are in graphic novel form. From this, we will be writing, editing and publishing our own myths in graphic novel form.
Maths
This week, we have learned about improper and proper fractions. We have then learned how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers.
Next week, we will learn how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions and also how to multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, such as ¼ x 5 and 2 ¾ x 6.
Thematic
During our afternoon lessons, we have focused on oracy. We have learned how good storytellers perform and engage the audience. We then wrote our own stories and performed these to others.
Next week, we will begin our new Thematic unit called ‘Gods and Mortals’. We will answer our Big Question and compare modern day to Ancient Greece using maps. We will also learn about the origins of the Olympics. In addition, we will be learning about democracy.

World Book Day Thursday 6th March 2025
This year's World Book Day theme at Chilton will be picture books. We invite children to share their favourite book on this day and if they wish, children are invited to dress up as their favourite character from a book if they prefer. We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes. An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day.

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 10th March and run until Friday 14th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher.
