Weekly News 28.2.25
Welcome back to Term 4! It is hard to believe that the children are already halfway through their year with us! They have returned from their break with fantastic attitudes, and we have had a great week, especially smashing some new maths learning. Here is what we have been up to…
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning about the decimal and fraction equivalents for tenths and hundredths. The children have learnt about the place value columns that come after the ones column, They now know that after the ones, we place a decimal point and that the columns after this are the tenths and hundredths columns, as in the pictures below.
The children learnt that 1/10 as a fraction is written as 0.1 as a decimal (as we have 1 tenth so the 1 goes in the tenths column). 3/10 = 0.3 9/10 = 0.9 etc. They learnt that ten tenths is equal to one whole, or 1 one as we call it on the place value chart.
We have learnt that 1/100 as a fraction is written as 0.01 as a decimal (as the 1 hundredth needs to go in the hundredth column). 4/100 = 0.04 and so on.
Here is a link to a website we used to visually show the children tenths and hundredths. It would be great to see if they can explain it to you at home https://www.geogebra.org/m/m9zqpwwv
We also learnt to divide numbers by 10 or 100 using place value sliders to move each digit one place value to the right to divide by 10, or 2 place value columns to the right to divide by 100. We found out that the decimal point does not move. E.g. 23 ÷ 10 = 2.3 187 ÷ 10 = 18.7 6 ÷ 10 = 0.6 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45 308 ÷ 10 = 30.8.
Here is a link to a website we used for this https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/60/itp-moving-digits
We finished off the week finding out the decimal equivalents for ¼, ½ and ¾.
¼ = 0.25 ½ = 0.5 ¾ = 0.75
Next week we will be learning some more about statistics. We will be solving problems using information presented in bar graphs, pictograms, tables and time graphs.
English
In English this week, we have started reading our new text, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. This is an emotive, funny story about a boy named Ahmet who is a refugee from Syria who joins a class with friends Josie, Alexa, Tom and Michael. The first genre we are learning to write is diary entries that show emotive language and viewpoint.
Next week, we will continue to learn about diary entries, finding out about the difference between formal and informal language and then writing our show-piece diary entry.
Thematic
It has been PSHE week this week. We have learnt about the British Values; The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, Mutual Respect and Democracy. We also found out about the 9 protected characteristics; age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and sex. The children learnt that it is against the law to discriminate against someone because of any of these characteristics. In Year 4, we focussed on race and learnt about what race and racism are. The children were given scenarios involving racism and in groups acted out how they would react to the scenarios. Here we are performing our scenarios to the class…
It has also been oracy week. The children have written their speech for The Viking Speaker competition, and we will be practising reading the speeches out loud next week and choosing our class winners who will go in to the next round of the competition (see below for more information). We have also been learning about storytelling. We thought about what makes a good storyteller and then told stories ourselves.
Next week we will be starting our new thematic unit called ‘Innovation Station’. In this interesting unit, the children will be learning science, history and technology. They will find out about the ‘Golden Age of Islam’ where many advancements were made and inventions created. We will learn about electricity and how to make circuits.

Love to Learn
This week’s home learning task is maths.
Write each of these decimals as a fraction:
2/10 = 4/10 = 9/10 = 3/100 = 27/100 = 85/100 =
Now write each of these decimals as a fraction:
0.01 = 0.05 = 0.8 = 0.6 = 0.45 = 0.73 =
Challenge – can you write more than one fraction that is equivalent to 0.5?
Please could this challenge be handed in by Wednesday 12th February.

PE is on a Wednesday this term so please send the children into school on a Wednesday wearing their PE kit and trainers.
The Viking Speaker 2025
The Speaker competition is an annual competition across the Viking Academy Trust that helps to develop children's Oracy skills. This week, in school, the children have each written an entry for the speaker competition. This year the children have been asked to write a two-minute speech convincing Mr McAuley to introduce a new subject of their choice into the curriculum. Next week, the children that wish to enter the competition will perform their speech to their classmates, with each class choosing one child to go through to the Chilton Final. Those children wishing to enter the competition have brought their speech home to practice. They may wish to edit their speech and practice performing their speeches to you at home. Any time you could give to support the children with this would be gratefully received.
World Book Day Thursday 6th March 2025
This year's World Book Day theme at Chilton, will be picture books. We invite children to share their favourite book on this day and if they wish. Children are invited to dress up as their favourite character from a book if they prefer. We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes. An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day.
Book Fayre
The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 10th March and run until Friday 14th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher. These can be spent at the Book Fayre. Cash and online payments are also available, and a percentage of the monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children.
