Weekly News 15.11.24
Year 4 have settled in to term 2 now and have been working incredibly hard this week. Let’s take a look at what we’ve been learning.
English
In English this week we have been learning some new skills to put into our writing. We have learned about personification where we give human qualities to inhuman objects (e.g. the trees were dancing in the wind). We also recapped similes (the icicles were as sharp as knives) and practiced writing metaphors where, instead of saying something is like something, we say something is something (e.g. the icicles were knives).
Next week we are going to learn some skills to help create suspense in our writing.
Maths
In Maths this week we have been comparing fractions with the same denominator but different numerators. We then moved on to learning about improper fractions and mixed numbers and how to convert one to the other. We learnt to do this by drawing out pizzas or chocolate bars and to split them into however many pieces the denominator told us to. We then shaded in the number of sections that the numerator told us to. Since we were working with improper fractions (where the numerator is larger than the denominator) we realized we had to draw more than one pizza/chocolate bar to represent the fraction and then convert it.
Next week we will finish off our fraction work and then move on to geometric shapes.
PSHE
In our PSHE this week we have been discussing how we can recognise bullying and why it is important to tell an adult if you think bullying is occurring as it can have serious impacts on people’s physical and mental health. We also discussed how we can show kindness to others but also how we can be kind to ourselves. We shared what we like to do to relax and make ourselves happy.

Love to Learn
For your love to learn this week we have a writing task for you.
Using the picture below as inspiration, write a short story about what could be living in that house. Perhaps it could be a spooky story, a fairy tale or a mystery.
Use the skills we have practiced this week like personification, similes, metaphors and speech to make it as interesting as possible. We can’t wait to read what you come up with!
