Weekly News! 13.09.24
It has been a brilliant second week in Year 3! It has been so wonderful to see how quickly the children have settled back into school, and we have been really impressed with how many have brought back in their Home Learning so quickly!
Guided Reading
This week we have been looking at the book ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We have focused on developing our understanding of vocabulary and constructing questions to further our understanding of a text.
English
Using the book ‘Stone Age Boy’, we focused this week on writing different sentence types. We started the week by writing commands, using the imperative verbs we looked at last week. We then moved on to statements, using interesting facts we discovered in our book to help us build clear sentences. Next we came up with our own questions, being careful to punctuate our work properly with question marks and even looking at using a question as a subheading. We finished our week by looking at exclamation sentences! We compiled all of our learning together to create a phenomenal showpiece, presenting the incredible facts we learnt using the four sentence types.
Maths
In Maths this week we have been focusing on Addition. We learnt how to use partitioning and number lines to add 3x3 digit numbers. We also began to look at using these strategies to solve missing number problems. We used our knowledge of place value and partitioning from last week to recognise when to add the hundreds, tens and ones.
Next week in Maths we will be beginning column addition and will be using our reasoning skills to help us solve addition based problem solving questions.
Fact of the week
Next week, the fact of the week is 2 X 4 = 8, 4 X 2 = 8
Thematic
In Thematic this week, we have begun our learning on our new topic ‘Prehistory Rocks’. We have been focusing on:
-
-
-
-
Prehistory through examining artefacts, learning significant achievements of the Stone Age and placing this era on a timeline.
-
-
-
-
The different stages of the Stone Age (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic)
-
Categorising different rock types (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic)
Home Learning
For our upcoming Harvest festival, we would like the children to learn more about their local food banks and the people in our community that it helps. Please see the list of our local food banks on the school website. For this week's Home Learning, children can design an eye-catching poster, encouraging our community to donate to our local food banks. It can include information regarding where to donate, suitable donations and who it can help. The best posters will be used during our Harvest Festival!
Harvest information
Later this term, we will be celebrating Harvest. As part of this, we would like to invite families in to watch our Harvest Assembly. These will take place in the school hall on the following dates:
Tuesday 1st October: 9am Year R and 1 and 2.45pm Year 2 and 3
Wednesday 2nd October: 9am Year 4 and 5 and 2.45pm Year 6
Please enter the school via the main school office.
As part of the celebrations, we will also be collecting food that we will be donating to Thanet Food Bank. We will be taking donations between Wednesday 25th September and Monday 30th September. If you are able to donate, the food bank accepts any tinned, jarred or packet foods that are in date. As a celebration of the donations, all children will be entered into a draw to win last years' celebration teddy bears, Kenneth and Susan.
