Weekly News! 3.4.25
What a fabulous week we have had in Year 2! Here is what we have been up to…
English
This week in English, we have reached the conclusion of our engaging non-fiction text, 'How Bees Make Honey.' The children have worked tremendously hard and I am proud to report that they have effectively utilised the skills we have developed throughout the term.
As part of our learning journey, each student created their own information leaflet all about bees. They have demonstrated their ability to include a variety of sentence types in their writing, encompassing questions, exclamations, and statements. It has been delightful to see their enthusiasm for non-fiction texts; their curiosity and creativity have truly shone through in their work
Next week we will be starting a new text… ‘Emily Brown and the thing’ by Cressida Cowell
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
This week we have been delving deeper into the world of fractions, and I am pleased to report that the children are making excellent progress!
This week, we focused on identifying fractions of a set of objects by sharing them equally, as well as recognising fractions of a quantity. We have been working with halves, thirds, and quarters, and it's been wonderful to see the students engage with these concepts. They’ve been using everyday items to visualise fractions, which makes the learning both fun and practical.
To further support your child’s understanding at home, I recommend incorporating fractions into daily activities. Whether it’s cooking together and measuring ingredients, sharing snacks, or discussing portions at mealtimes, these real-life contexts can really reinforce what they are learning in class. Engaging with fractions in these ways can help make the concept more tangible and relatable for the children.
Next term we will be revisiting number and place value, where we will be identifying and estimating numbers on a number line and begin rounding numbers to the nearest ten.
RE
Throughout the week, students have explored the fundamental beliefs and practices of Judaism. We began our discussions by focusing on the significance of the Torah, which is central to Jewish faith and tradition. The children learned about the moment the Torah was given to Moses on Mount Sinai, which serves as a pivotal event in Jewish history.
To further enrich their understanding, we examined how the Torah is utilised in the Jewish faith today. Students discovered the importance of the stories and laws contained within the Torah, and we read several narratives that highlight key principles of Jewish teachings. This not only fostered an appreciation of Jewish culture but also encouraged empathy and respect for diverse beliefs.
Next term, we will start our brand new thematic topic ‘Passion for Fashion’
Love to Learn
Over the Easter holidays we would love for you to take time with your family, enjoying the break and making the most of the sunshine. We would love for you to continuing reading, quizzing and we would also like for you to create a non-fiction leaflet about something of your interest. This could be based around; chocolate, dogs, Easter… ANYTHING 😊
