One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 21.3.25

What a fabulous week we have had in Year 2! Thank you to all the children for the generous donations for comic relief and for making such a wonderful effort with the 80's party costumes! Here is what we have been up to…

English

Within our English lessons this week the children have been actively engaged with our class text, "Surprising Sharks". It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity about these fascinating creatures!

This week, we have been focusing on creating our own non-chronological reports. The students have embraced this task wonderfully, showcasing their creativity and understanding of shark-related information. Their reports include various types of sentences, such as statements, exclamations, and questions, allowing them to express their new knowledge in an engaging way.

I encourage you to ask your child about what they have learned. They may share interesting facts or even engage you in a discussion about sharks’ habitats, diets, and behaviour. It’s a great way to reinforce their learning at home.Next week we will be moving on to a new text! ‘Surprising Sharks!’

Next week we will be starting a new non-fiction text… ‘How bees make honey’ by Louise Spilsbury.

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

This week, we have continued our learning on measuring length. The children have shown significant progress as we have delved into the complexities of adding and subtracting lengths. Following this, we have successfully transitioned to the application of multiplication and division facts related to length. I am proud to say that the students have demonstrated great perseverance and dedication during this learning phase, tackling some challenging problems with commendable enthusiasm.

Looking ahead, we will be introducing the concept of fractions next week.

Thematic

Within our thematic lessons this week, which have proven to be both engaging and enlightening for the pupils.

We began our week with a very special visitor, Mrs Winchcombe's mother, who works at the local hospital. The children were absolutely fascinated as they had the opportunity to ask her questions about the care provided in hospitals. She shared valuable insights into the hospital buildings and discussed the significant changes in tools and equipment over the years. I was impressed by the thoughtful questions the children posed, demonstrating their growing understanding of historical changes and the profound impact Florence Nightingale had on nursing practices.

Building on this learning, we delved into the basic needs of humans and animals, exploring the essential differences between needs and wants. The discussions were vibrant, with many pupils expressing their ideas and reflections, which deepened their comprehension of these concepts.

To conclude our week, we explored the distinctions between things that are alive, dead, and those that have never lived. This activity not only fostered critical thinking but also enriched their understanding of the natural world around them.

Love to Learn

This week we would love for you to create your own ‘bee’ poster. We would love for you to find lots of information about bees and share this is a poster. On your poster, we would love for you to include statements, exclamations and questions.
