One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 7.3.25

Wow! What a week it has been from Wonka bar wins to World Book Day, we have loved every minute! Thank you so much for your cooperation and support with these events 😊

English

This week, we rolled up our sleeves and put our creative minds to work by writing our own instruction manuals on how to look after frogs. The children displayed immense enthusiasm as they focused on important writing skills, including using statements, labelling images, crafting captions, employing questions as subheadings, and incorporating time conjunctions. Their hard work truly shone through in their thoughtful pieces.

As we concluded our week, we delved into the enchanting picture book 'Flotsam' by David Wiesner. This unique story captures the imagination without a single word, telling the tale through captivating illustrations. The narrative follows a young boy at the beach who discovers an old camera that has washed ashore. After developing the film, he uncovers a series of extraordinary underwater scenes, including everything from a robot fish to turtles adorned with vibrant cities on their backs.

To provide context before exploring the book, we engaged with some sandtrays to help the children grasp the concept of 'flotsam'. The pupils then got busy discussing and recording what they could see in the pictures, formulating questions about the narrative, and sharing their own creative thoughts. To wrap up our exploration of this imaginative book, each child painted their own interpretation of what they believe their camera might capture beneath the waves.

We have the most wonderful World Book Day and even watched our teachers perform the Smeds and the Smoos!

Next week we will be moving on to a new text! ‘Surprising Sharks!’

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Many children have now been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. (Please check their reading records for their ZPD scores. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

We've been diving into the fascinating world of the commutative law and exploring how multiplication can be done in any order. It's been an exciting and engaging topic for the children!

Throughout the week, the students tackled some tricky challenges that required them to apply their understanding in practical ways. I was quite impressed with their problem-solving skills and perseverance. To further aid their learning, we've also been using peg boards, which have been a wonderful tool for visualising and manipulating numbers. This hands-on approach really helps reinforce their understanding of multiplication in a fun and interactive manner.

Next week we will be looking at measure, concentrating on length.

Thematic

This week in our thematic lessons, we have been diving into the remarkable life of Florence Nightingale, a true pioneer in the field of nursing. The students have shown great enthusiasm as we explored her contributions to healthcare, and I’m excited to share a few highlights with you.

We created a timeline of Florence's life, marking significant events that shaped her journey as a trailblazer. It was fantastic to see the children engaging with the material and piecing together the timeline to understand how her experiences influenced her work. We also tackled some tricky questions about her life and legacy, which challenged their critical thinking skills and encouraged lively discussions.

As we continue to learn about Florence Nightingale, I encourage you to have conversations at home about her impact on nursing and health care. Perhaps you could ask your child what they found most interesting about her life or which facts they thought were surprising. This can not only reinforce what they’ve learned but also deepen their curiosity about history and the role of influential figures within it.

Love to Learn

This week we would love for you to fine our five facts about Florence Nightingale and write them as statements. (A "statement" is a sentence that tells you something, like a fact or an opinion, and usually ends with a full stop)

Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 10th March and run until Friday 14th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. Children will come home with a World Book Day book voucher.  These can be spent at the Book Fayre.
