One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 18.10.24

We can't believe how quickly this week has flown by in Year 2—it has been nothing short of wonderful and exceptionally busy!

English

This week, we have been diligently practising our sounds, ensuring that each child is feeling thoroughly confident with them. Recognising these sounds is fundamental to their reading and writing journey. Additionally, we have tackled those tricky 'red words' that often cause confusion. Your support in reinforcing these at home would be invaluable.

In our SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) lessons, the children took on the role of spelling detectives! They had the opportunity to correct some of Mrs Winchcombe's spelling mistakes, ensuring correct usage of capital letters and full stops. We also discussed alternative sounds and spellings, which is a fantastic way to enhance their phonetic understanding. We even explored different punctuation marks, including question and exclamation marks, which added an element of fun to the learning process.

In Mrs Winchcombe's English group, we delved into the creative world of expanded noun phrases. The children demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and engagement while sequencing and summarising the story of "Rapunzel" by Bethan Woolvin. This tale provided a wonderful platform for them to express their understanding and creativity.

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Some children have been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319

For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader

Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

This week in maths, we have been focusing on consolidating our understanding of addition and subtraction. The children have been working hard to ensure that they read each question carefully so they can grasp what is being asked of them.

To aid our learning, we utilised a hundred square which has proven to be a helpful visual tool for understanding number relationships and operations. It’s wonderful to see how many of the children have taken the initiative to challenge themselves by tackling tricky word problems. They are beginning to establish whether they need to add or subtract in various contexts, which is a crucial skill in mathematics.

Next week we will be looking at time.

Thematic

During our thematic computing lessons this past week we kicked things off by discussing the importance of keeping our usernames and passwords safe. It’s crucial that children understand the significance of online security, so please encourage them to apply the tips we covered at home. Ensuring that they use strong passwords and do not share them with anyone is essential in promoting their online safety.

After our discussion on security, we had a fantastic time learning how to conduct online searches. The children particularly enjoyed exploring various types of plants, which sparked some intriguing conversations! It’s wonderful to see their curiosity flourish.

To wrap up the week, we dived into an exciting activity using Scratch, where the students created their very own avatars of a tree or plant. Not only did they design the avatars, but they also learned how to make them move by inputting algorithms.

Next week we will learning about leaders and teachers in RE

Love to Learn

Next week we will be looking at telling the time. To start this learning off we would love for you to create your own clock and recap your learning of telling the time to the hour. Can you show 1 o’clock? 6 o’clock? And 10 o'clock?
