Weekly News! 25.10.2024
We have come to the end of Term 1, and what a term it has been! The children quickly settled back into school life at Chilton 8 weeks ago and have continued to amaze and impress us with their progress both academically, personally and socially over the past 8 weeks. We wish you all a relaxing and fun-filled week next week and look forward to seeing you again for the start of Term 2 on Monday 4th November.
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. we have been reviewing sounds we know and learning new sounds. We have continued to use our sounds to read and write words, phrases and sentences. In particular, we have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Please ensure that all reading record wallets are placed in the coloured trays on the first Monday after half term so that we can change the colour of your child’s home reading book if necessary.
Maths
This week in maths, children have been developing their reasoning skills. Throughout the week, we have been learning about the commutative law for addition (that you can add numbers in any order and get the same answer e.g. 3+2=5 and 2+3=5). The children used manipulatives early on in the week to prove this and used reasoning sentence starters (e.g. I noticed that….. I checked this by….) to explain their maths learning. Later on in the week, they used part-part-whole models to help write both addition calculation sentences to match what was shown in the part-part-whole model.
Fact of the week
This week we have been reviewing all of the facts of the week we have learned so far this term:
1+1=2
1+2=3
1+3=4
1+4=5
After the half term, we will be learning to read, write and count numbers up to 50 and learn how to identify odd and even numbers up to 20 (and beyond!)
RE week
This week we have been completing our RE learning for this term. We started the week by thinking about our wonderful world and what makes it amazing. We then learned about the Christian creation story, looking at what happened on each day. We ended the week by thinking about how we can look after our world.
Thematic
After half term, we will start a new thematic unit: Thunderbolts and Lightening. In this unit, we will look at the weather we typically have in the UK during the 4 seasons, we will learn about the 4 countries which make up the UK and learn about the main weather symbols.
Reading
Mondays – RWI books to be changed by an adult. Please could ALL reading wallets be put in the trays so that we can check who has earned a certificate.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – children can change their learning zone book (the one with the coloured sticker on). Please help them to have this book ready to change when they come into the classroom in the mornings. Thank you!
Children will bring home two books in their reading folders, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves (on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday)- first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! These books can be changed as regularly as needed.
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in an assembly.
Children will also get a certificate for every 20 times they read so it is important that the reading record gets signed every time they read at home. BOTH RWI BOOKS AND THE LEARNING ZONE BOOKS CAN BE RECORDED IN THE READING RECORDS!
There will also be a sticker in your child’s reading record which will explain which skill they are working on with regards to their reading.
If you have any questions, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Love to Learn
Well done to all of the children who have been completing their love to learn tasks. We can see that a lot of time and effort has gone in to completing these activities – well done!
As it is the end of term, we would like you to tell us about your favourite part of Year 1 so far. Was it when we had the grandparents to visit? Or was it the Harvest assembly? Was your favourite part of Year 1 so far, the trip to the park or was it a particular maths or RWI session? You could write about this or draw a picture to show us. We cannot wait to see what your best time was so far!
Please remember that children are only allowed to use 1 page in their books each week. Thank you!
Love to Learn books need to be returned by next Wednesday.
Other news
Sports Slam (our additional PE lesson) is on a Monday. This is where the children will refine a skill each term, for this term our skill is jumping. Please can the children wear trainers and their normal school uniform on this day.
PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. Children need to wear a plain white t-shirt, black or navy bottoms and a plain black or blue sweatshirt.
Read at 3 is on every Friday at 3pm this is where we would love to invite you into our classrooms and read with your child for 15 minutes. This will happen every Friday this term.
Power Play
During Power Play we have been practising our fine motor skills by using pipettes to drip vinegar onto pumpkins made from bicarb, water and food colouring. The children loved watching the magical pumpkins fizz.
