Weekly News! 4.10.24
Wow what a fantastic week in Year 1, we have been working incredibly hard with our learning this week. Take a look at what we have been getting up to 😊
Harvest
A huge thank you for all your kind donations and support coming into watch the harvest assembly.
Maths
This week in maths we have been looking at subtraction!
On Monday we used cubes to help us break numbers into parts, and help us subtract. We looked carefully at the calculation, counting out how many cubes we need, then we broke away the amount we needed to subtract to give us an answer.
On Wednesday, we subtracted by using our number bonds and part-part-whole models. We had to use the part-part-whole models correctly with the Numicon tiles and then write a subtraction calculation to match it.
Today, we have been learning how to develop our problem solving skill of reasoning. We started off the lesson by looking at what happens when we subtract 0 to a number. We then worked with our partners to use resources to find the answers to calculations when we subtract 1. We then had to work together to explain what is happening using our reasoning sentence starters to help us.
Next week in maths the children will be continuing their skills of subtraction.
Fact of the week
Each week we will have a fact of the week. We will learn the addition fact(s) and the related subtraction fact(s). This week our fact of the week is:
4 + 1 = 5
1 + 4 = 5
Read, Write Inc.
This week in Read, Write Inc. We have met our new RWI teachers. We have been reviewing our sounds and working so hard phonetically reading words. We have been looking for special friends in our words, saying the sounds and reading the word. Any practise at home reading a word by finding the special friends, saying the sounds and reading the word would be greatly appreciated! We have also been working hard on our handwriting and writing sentences with capital letters and full stops.
Thematic
This week we learnt about Augustus Pugin, a famous artist and architect who lived in Ramsgate in the 1800s. We looked at some of the local buildings he designed and pointed out differences between them and our school and homes. This led into a discussion about gothic architecture and the gothic revival, through which Pugin left a lasting impact on the history of architecture. On Friday we had a very special visit with some of our grandparents coming into talk to us. We loved looking at the photos that they brought from their past and hearing all about our family histories from a time before we were alive. We found out all sorts of interesting facts, such as there used to be an outdoor swimming pool in Ramsgate, but it is now a car park!
Next week we will be continuing our thematic learning ‘My home my town’ and looking at Geography.
Grandparent visit
Thank you to the grandparents that came in and talked about what Ramsgate was like when they were younger.
