Well done to Year 5 for another superb week of learning. Here's what we've been up to:

English

This week, we have continued following Odysseus's journey home from the Trojan War. After seeing his mother in the Land of the Dead, we wrote as Odyssesus using emotive language before moving on to write informally in a diary entry about the song of the sirens. We then expressed our viewpoint about the decision Odysseus faced regarding Charybdis the Swallower and Scylla the Devourer. Next week, we will be writing our own Greek myths. 

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been looking at shape and focusing on Reflection and Translation of shapes. We also revisited co-ordinates to help us with our reflections and translations. We also completed a 'working backwards' investigation. Next week, we will be studying angles. 

Thematic Curriculum

This week, we have continued our study of Ancient Greece in our Term 4 thematic unit, 'Gods and Mortals'. We looked at different Ancient Greek philosophers and considered the questions that they asked and their impact on the world today. We also started the DT section of our unit by studying CAMs. Next week, we will be using Lego Engineering sets to create our own models using CAMs as well as completing some Computing lessons and laptop skills. We will also be visiting the British Museum and their Ancient Greek exhibtion. 

World Science Day

On Monday, we celebrated World Science Day. Miss Isaac hosted a special assembly before we discussed what Science actually is and the stereotypes around scientists. Finally, we designed our own experiment to test the effect of air resistance on pendulums (which we made ourselves by using string, blue tack and a battery).

Love to Learn

For the Love to Learn task this week, please could children create a piece of writing focusing on using emotive language. The piece of writing can be about anything the children choose but needs to include words and phrases to make their reader respond emotionally. 

Science Day Poster Competition 

For British Science week, the theme this year is ‘Time’. You are invited to enter a competition to create a poster maybe showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself. Budding poster makers could also go futuristic, showing us how they think the world might look in years to come. You could perhaps look at nature – lifecycles, lifespans, evolution and hibernation – nature is full of timely topics. Your poster must only be A4 or A3 size. It will be scanned so it must be flat. There will be prizes in school and also our 5 best entries from across the school will be entered to a national competition. Here is what the judges will be looking for: 

Creativity in approach  – don’t be afraid to think outside the box and present your entry in a slightly different way. 

Content – Clear, accurate and informative about a Science topic. 

Effective communication – presented and communicated in an engaging way.
