Weekly News! 8.3.24
Well done to Year 5 for another wonderful week and thank you for the amazing efforts that were put in to the children's World Book Day costumes. Here's what we've been up to:
English
This week, we have continued to read Hugh Lupton's 'The Adventures of Odysseus' reading about his journey to the island of the Cyclopes, his battle at sea with Poseidon and being trapped on the island of the temptress, Circe. We wrote a series of descriptions focusing on the use of expanded noun phrases and figurative language. Next week, we will be focusing on viewpoint and writing in role as Odysseus.
World Book Day
On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day by sharing bedtime stories and dressing up either in our pyjamas or as our favourite book character. We read 'The Owl and the Pussycat' by Edward Lear in class and summarised with a story map. We read the story without any illustrations and then created some, a line each, to accompany the story. Miss Hall, Miss Dudley-Smith and Mrs Cotton came to share stories with us, Mrs Rowland-Hill, Mrs Cheshire and Miss Issac shared stories in assembly and we watched the Chilton Masked Readers and tried to identify the mystery readers (videos linked below). We also designed our own bookmarks.

Maths
In Maths this week, we have been converting units of time. We started by recapping telling the time and making reference cards reminding us of the different conversions before looking at conversions between seconds, minutes and hours before moving on to conversions between days, weeks and months. Next week, we will be studying reflection and translation.
Thematic Curriculum
This week, we have continued our study of Ancient Greece in our Term 4 thematic unit, 'Gods and Mortals'. Firstly, we looked at a number of important Gods and Goddess in Greek mythology and created Top Trump cards to compare them to each other. Next, we look at the importance of Greek literature by learning about Homer's epic poems and Aesop's fable before looking at Ancient Greek architecture and redesigning Chilton in an Ancient Greek inspired way.
Love to Learn
For the Love to Learn task this week, please could children research the Greek God or Goddess of their choice. They can present information about their immortal in a creative way of their choosing.
Science Day Poster Competition
On Monday 11th March, we will be taking part in British Science Week here at Chilton. For British Science week, the theme this year is ‘Time’. You are invited to enter a competition to create a poster maybe showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself. Budding poster makers could also go futuristic, showing us how they think the world might look in years to come. You could perhaps look at nature – lifecycles, lifespans, evolution and hibernation – nature is full of timely topics. Your poster must only be A4 or A3 size. It will be scanned so it must be flat. There will be prizes in school and also our 5 best entries from across the school will be entered to a national competition. Here is what the judges will be looking for:
Creativity in approach – don’t be afraid to think outside the box and present your entry in a slightly different way.
Content – Clear, accurate and informative about a Science topic.
Effective communication – presented and communicated in an engaging way.
Entries to Miss Isaac by Friday 22nd March 2024
