Weekly News! 13.10.23
Year 5 have had a wonderful week, working incredibly hard and having lots of fun.
English
This week, we put Ernest Henry Shackleton on trial to decide whether he was guilty of being a bad leader. As a year group we discussed whether we thought that his captaincy on his Trans-Antarctic voyage showed him to be a strong and positive leader or if he proved himself to be a poor and incompetent leader. We bought up many different points that showed both sides of his leadership skills, then over the week we wrote viewpoints from the stowaway - Percy Blackborow, his second in command - Frank Worsley and finally, his wife - Emily. All have different viewpoints of Shackleton's ability as a leader and we were able to write accurately in their role.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been focusing on time. We have been able to read both analogue and digital time, including the 24 hour format and have been able to tell the time accurately to the nearest minute.
Thematic
We have been focusing on environmental issues in Thematic this week. We learnt about overpopulation and its effects it has socially, economically and environmentally. In groups, we designed posters to raise awareness about this issue. Next, we wrote speeches about this issue to highlight ways we can help the cause. To promote our oracy skills, we all read our speeches to the class.
Home Learning
For your home learning, we would like you to write about a leader in your life. They can be someone you know or a person that inspires you. Mention what leadership skills they display and why that person is important to you.
