Another great week in year 5. Everybody is working very hard and some outstanding work has been produced. Well done team!

English

This week, we have started writing non-chronological reports about Antarctica. We began by researching the geography of the continent (the topography, location and climate) then wrote the first paragraph of our report. Next, we researched the wildlife that resides there and completed our second paragraph. We focused on using formal language and technical vocabulary to enhance our reports.

Maths

Our lessons this week have been focused on two of the four operations – addition and subtraction. We have been using the column method to answer our equations, breaking down the steps used when solving addition and subtraction problems.

Thematic Curriculum

This week, we began our new thematic unit called ‘Across the Pond’. We looked at the countries that make up the continent of North America and delved into the pre-existing knowledge we have of these countries. We then discussed some of the history of this unique continent, discussing its origins and major events over time, finally creating a timeline to log these events. Next, we looked at the names of some of the places in North America, asking if they could lend us clues as to the nationalities of the original colonists or whether they are native names.

We would like you to create a piece of work in the style of one of the four artist we have been studying in our art lessons (Basquiat, Rothko, Pollock or Weiwei). Can you explain the meaning behind your work? Does it link to any of the images we have been looking at?

- Top Up PE is on a WEDNESDAY. Please can children come to school in their uniform wearing suitable trainers.

- PE is on a FRIDAY. Please can children come to school wearing (correct and suitable) PE kit.

- Guitars will start next Thursday (21/9) both individual lessons and whole class Year 5 lessons.
