What a wonderful first week back Year 5 have had! Thank you everyone for settling back in to school life so quickly and for working so hard this week. Here's what we have been up to:

English

In English this week, we have been writing a setting description on the continent of Antarctica in preparation for beginning our new book 'Ice Trap: Shackleton's Incredible Expedition'. We focused on using interesting, ambitious language, expanded noun phrases and figurative language. In Guided Reading, we made predictions based on the book's front cover, clarified a number of words from our coversheet and answered comprehension questions on Antarctica. Next week, we will be writing a non-chronological report on Antarctica.

Maths

In Maths, we have been working on Place Value. We used to a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to help us understand the place value of different digits in different numbers. We also looked at how to use greater than, less than and equals signs to compare and then order numbers. Finally, we looked a t rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Next week, we will be studying Addition and Subtraction.

Afternoons

In our afternoons this week, we have been revisiting the Chilton Way looking specifically at our Chilton values and rules. We also created a set of class rules for us to follow. We also discussed the importance of the Zones of Regulation and created a toolbox of ideas and resources to help us reach/stay in the Green zone. Next week, we will start our Term 1 topic 'Frozen Kingdom'.

Important information and dates:

- Year 5 PE will be on a THURSDAY this term and will be SWIMMING. Children will need to come to school in their PE kit (blue/black hoody and shorts and plain white t shirt) and bring their swimming kit with them. NOTE: If your child is in Group 2, they will return to school later than the end of the school day.  

- Year 5 Sports Project will be on a WEDNESDAY. Children will need to come to school in their school uniforms with TRAINERS.

- In Year 5, children should be reading 4 times a week and bringing in their reading records daily, Children should also be playing TTRS regularly at home.

- Year 5 music lessons (guitars with Mr Cooney) will start on Thursday 22nd September. Children are welcome to bring in their own personal guitars if they would like to.
