In English this week we have been continuing to look at poetry and our focus this week has been on form and structure. We have looked at the different poem structures and syllables. More specifically, we have explored haikus and shape poems. They have really developed their poetry skills and they have created some fantastic work!
Next term, our new book is Fly, Eagle, Fly. This is an African folk tale. In the book, a tribesman finds an eagle chick and raises it as a chicken. When the eagle is full-grown, another man says that he can teach the eagle to be an eagle, not a chicken (which is how it behaves). He tries several times and fails, until he takes the eagle up to the mountain, shows it the sunrise and it spreads its wings and flies. The moral of the story is that we shouldn’t put up with just being chickens, that we should all spread our wings and fly.
The children will focus on the following writing sequence:

5-part narrative to include: Opening, Build-Up, Problem, Resolution, Ending.
As part of their Guided Reading lessons, the children will use their reciprocal reading skills such as: predicting, summarising, questioning and clarifying. They will also use their retrieval and inferencing comprehension skills as well as exploring African poetry and art.
Maths
This week we have continued with converting measurements of volume and our problem-solving skill this term – trial and improvement. We have looked at a mixture of Christmassy problems and applied our learning in specific situations.
Next term we are going back to number and place value as part of our spiral curriculum. These are our objectives:

Round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. (To round appropriately given context see division strand)

To identify and count in negative numbers.

To estimate and round numbers using measuring instruments.
