English

In English this week, we have started looking at non-chronological reports. We have started writing our reports using characters for ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We have been focusing on subheadings and categorising information correctly depending on the topic of information, as well as using a formal tone in present tense with interesting sentence openers.

Next week, we are researching information about an animal of our choice and writing a non-chronological report about it. We will be focusing on the subheadings… introduction, appearance, diet and habitat.

Maths

This week we have looked at telling the time on an analogy and digital clock. We have also begun to look at 24-hour clocks too! This is always a tricky skill to learn as digital clocks are all around us, but, analogy clocks are a lot rarer. If you can do some additional learning at home, it would be incredibly beneficial.

Next week, we are revisiting our learning for this term and recapping key concepts like multiplication, division and subtraction.  

Thematic curriculum

In Thematic, due to sharing laptops, Team Cyan and Team Turquoise have been learning different topics this week.

Team Cyan have been using laptops to create a simple scratch code involving moving, music and multiple ‘Sprites’! They have had a great time figuring out the different codes and how those instructions link directly to actions and sounds. In addition, the children have learnt about digital safety and passwords, which is so important as they grow up and have more access to the internet. Finally, the children completed their end of term Thematic assessment using our new quizzing format!

Team Turquoise have been learning about Sikhism in Religious Education. We have looked at their beliefs and different ceremonies they carry out for religious reasons. The children found their naming ceremony very interesting. We learnt that, for Sikhs, a baby’s name is not chosen until the mother and baby are able to travel to the gurdwara (temple) for a special ceremony called ‘Naam Karan’. All Sikh names can be used for boys or girls. If the baby is a boy, the word ‘Singh‘ (which means lion) will be added after the first name. If the baby is a girl, the word ‘Kaur’ (which means princess) is added after the first name. For example, if the first letter of the hymn is ‘H’ the baby may be called Hardit. If the baby is a boy, he will be Hardit Singh. If the baby is a girl, she will be Hardit Kaur.

Love to learn

Your love to learn challenge this week is… Maths!

We would love you to write a timeline diary of your day, reading a mixture of digital (12-hour and 24-hour) and analogy clocks to find the time.

For example:

6:30am – I woke up.

7:05am – I ate breakfast.

8:00am – I got dressed.

… and so on!

Please send completed homework in by Wednesday 18^th October.

Spellings

This week we will be focusing on red words (3/4 common exception words) that we have been looking at over the term. These are the following words we would like you to focus on this week:

calendar, caught, centre, century, certain, circle, complete, consider, continue, decide, describe, different, difficult, disappear, early

Over the week, we will be assessing the children on these words.

Reading at home

Please can we ask that children are reading at home 4 times a week. This can be their schoolbook in their ZPD level, or one for home. We want to promote a love of reading, so we never want to limit their enjoyment of different genres.

When reading at home, please quiz on books read by using the login details sent home in Week 3. If the book doesn’t have a quizzing code, simply type the name of the book. Some books from home and school can be quizable, but do not have labels on them.

One of our parents at Chilton, is completing a Sky Dive in order to raise money for the charity SANDS, who support anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby or child. House point winners

We will find out which house has collected the most house points this term in assembly on Friday. We will share this with you via MCAS and social media. The winning house will have their non-school uniform day on Wednesday 18^th October.

During the first week back after half-term, we will be having an Ancient Egyptian day in Year 4 and would like to invite the children to come to school dressed up as something to do with Ancient Egypt. We will let you know in due course which day this will be on but wanted to let you know, so you can begin organising costumes if your child would like to dress up.
