One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News 12/5/23

Maths

In maths this week, the children have been recapping their understanding of equivalent fractions. We began the week by finding equivalent fractions by shading, we also moved onto finding equivalent fractions by using the multiplication method. If you multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number, you will always find an equivalent fraction. We finished the week by connecting fractions and decimals by using a number line. We were finding where numbers would be on a number line and understanding what fraction and decimal they would be. For example, finding 2.8 on a number line and understanding that it is 2 and 8/10. Next week, we will be continuing with connecting of fractions decimals but using word problems.

English

In English, we read our last story from our book ‘The Tales of Wisdom and Wonder’. It was a story about a blind man and a hunter. We continued to concentrate of poetry but we began the week by using a syllable structure. We create Tanka poems which has a structure of 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, 5 for the third and the last two lines both have 7 syllables. We then finished the week by using figurative language in our poems. Next week we will be starting a new book called 'The Watertower' and exploring suspense writing.

Thematic curriculum and PSHE

This week in our thematic learning, it was art week. We used watercolour techniques to recreate JMW Turner and Constables cloud paintings. We finished the week by continuing our PSHE topic called ‘Be Here, Be You, Belong. We focused on why the children are proud to be part of Chilton and what they find great about the school.

LOVE TO LEARN

This week for our LOVE TO LEARN, we would like the children to create their own cloud piece of art. You can use whatever you would like to create this piece of art, it just needs to be cloud related. Be creative!
