Weekly News 19.04.24
What a fantastic start to the term Year 3 have had. They have come back ready to learn, so let’s show you what we have been up to!
English
In English this week, we began our new class text of Charlotte’s Web. The children are already fascinated by the story and are eager to find out what happens next in our story. In our writing, we have been focusing on writing diary entries from different viewpoints. At the start of the week, we were writing from the perspective of Fern and how she saved a cute, innocent pig from the injustice of an untimely death! The children were incredible at using emotive language to show how they felt about this ordeal! We finished the week by having our own imagined experience of Pippa being cheeky and escaping from school. We pretended that we had to go and look for her, but she had actually been taken on a walk! We wrote about our feelings of worry and frustration before talking about the relief when we found her.
Next week, we will be moving on to writing setting descriptions about the barn where Wilbur lives.
Maths
Our Maths learning this week has been focused on place value. We began the week by recapping what place value is before moving on to estimating. The children really persevered with quite a tricky topic and are now very confident in this area! We then moved on to look at different ways to represent numbers, using dienes and coins to show different numbers. We learnt that we can use £1 coins to represent hundreds, 10p coins to represent tens and 1p coins to represent 1’s.
Next week, we will be focusing on addition and subtraction, including counting back to subtract, using bar models and solving word problems, using the inverse to check our answers.
Fact of the week
Our fact of the week next week will be:
7 x 6 = 42
Thematic
We kicked off our new thematic topic this week, Mayans: The rise and fall. We started our topic by learning about the geography of South America. We learnt about its geographical location in the world, the countries that make up South America and the different human and physical features that can be found in South America. The children blew us away with how inquisitive they were about this learning and the amazing facts they already knew” We then moved on to learn about where the Mayans lived, a place called MesoAmerica, that is an area of South America made up of 5 countries (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador) and some of the Mayan cities within this area. The children labelled these on a map and drew some of the temples that can be found in the cities.
Next week, we will be learning more about who the Mayans were and when they existed.
