W/B Monday 9th January Team Indigo and Team Royal
Blog
Wow what an incredibly busy week we have had in Team Indigo and Team Royal, take a look at what we have been up to….
Maths
This week in maths we have been learning about addition. We started off the week by adding 3 1 digit numbers for example, 7 + 3 + 5. We then introduced column addition without regrouping and with regrouping.
Guided Reading
This week in Guided Reading we have been performing the story The Snail and the Whale through dance and drama. We looked at the journey they both took and were able to summarise, answer questions about the story and write a poem.
RWI/English
This week in English we have been continuing our book The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson. We have been focusing on our writing skills and have been practicing how to use similes, expanded noun phrases, construct simple sentences and to show different points of view. We incorporated all our skills on Friday to write a postcard as the snail to his snail family about his wonderful journey he had been on.
In RWI this week we have been focusing on building up their fluency when reading, this included their pace, speed, expressions and reading punctuation. Any additional practice at home will be hugely beneficial.
Thematic Curriculum
This term our Topic is Passion for Fashion, we have been artists and scientist this week. In Art this week we looked at the British Designers Thomas Burberry, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. We made our own collages with the processes they use in their designs to include colour, shape, pattern, texture and lines. We then improved on our Chilton jumper designs from last week by incorporating the processes we had learnt from the British designers. In science this week we have been carrying out investigations on different types of materials such as pipe cleaners, playdough and plastic bottles to see if we can squash, squeeze, stretch, bend or twist them.
Next week
Next week in English we will be focusing on sentence openers, verbs, adjectives, punctuation and writing our own sequel to The Snail and the Whale.
Next week in maths we will be continuing column addition and starting subtracting using the column method.
Next week in our thematic curriculum science lessons we will be continuing our investigations with materials.

Parent Workshop – Sound Surgery
Key Stage One Parent Workshop – Sound Surgery For parents of Year 1 and 2 children, it will have been some time since the phonics and reading workshops that we delivered right at the beginning of children’s Reception year. Phonics and reading are still an absolutely fundamental aspect of children’s learning, especially in Key Stage One and so we would like to invite Year 1 and 2 parents to a ‘Sound Surgery’ where we will explain and demonstrate how children learn phonics and to read. This will be held in the hall after school from 3:15 – 3:45 on Tuesday 17th January. Please collect children from classrooms and come round to the office to enter the hall.
