We've had another wonderful week! Read on to find out all about it...
Read, Write Inc.
We have been continuing practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. We have been really working on our big writes, keeping diaries at home, writing comic strips, writing postcards/cards, and making up stories at home can really support this. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!
Some of us have been working especially hard on reading with expression and we made puppets to help us act out the story of Beegu!
Reading
*UPDATE* Read, Write, Ink home readers will now be changed on Mondays not Fridays. Please continue to remind the children to put their reading folder in the coloured trays so that we can give them new books.
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child. Please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Let's practice spotting special friends, fred talk, read the word. Your words of the week are....remember you can break up multisyllabic words into two chunks with your finger to help!
Maths
We kicked off the week with a problem solving investigation focussing on conjecturing and reasoning. We used used next-door numbers to make generalisations about adding odd and even numbers together. We had to choose two consecutive numbers, add them together and spot a pattern. We realised that whenever you add two consecutive numbers the answer will always be odd because there will always be an odd one out. This is different to adding two even numbers together, as each number will always have a pair! Take a look at our results!
Next we looked at making arrays. We had a carousel of activities. We had to pick a multiplication sentence and show it using either stamps, pom-poms in baking trays, peg boards and counters. Finally, we looked at equal groups! We had to find how many equal groups we had, which gave us the first number of our calculation. Then we counted how many items were in each group, which gave us the second number of our multiplication sentence. Then we counted the items in each group together to get our answer!
Next week, we will continue looking at arrays and multiplication.
Thematic
This week we kicked our new topic 'Everchanging Environments' off with some Science. We were given the items we needed to plant a seed. We discussed what we think seeds need to grow and how to plant them. We decided to plant some seeds outside, pop one in a dark cupboard with no light and one in our conservatory with no water and one with nothing at all. We then made some predictions on what we think will happen to the seeds. We then discussed our big question for this term…’How does our environment change over the year?’ We came up with some wonderful answers. Take a look at what we thought and what we got up to!
Then, we labelled the parts of a plant and discussed the similarities and differences between flowering plants and trees. We ended the week by recapping our learning on deciduous and evergreen trees and went up to forest school to do some tree identification. We had THE BEST TIME!
Home learning
This week we would for you to continue your learning around types of trees. We would love for you to try to find some different species of both deciduous and evergreen trees. You may record this in anyway you wish!
