One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w.b 3.6.24

What a fantastic week it has been!

Read, Write Inc.

We have been continuing practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. We have been really working on our big writes, keeping diaries at home, writing comic strips, writing postcards/cards, and making up stories at home can really support this. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

We are all set and ready for our Phonics screen Monday and Tuesday next week 😊

Reading

*UPDATE*     Read, Write, Ink home readers will now be changed on Mondays not Fridays. Please continue to remind the children to put their reading folder in the coloured trays so that we can give them new books.

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child. Please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Let's practice spotting special friends, fred talk, read the word. Your words of the week are....remember you can break up multisyllabic words into two chunks with your finger to help!

Maths

This week the children have been absolutely brilliant working on addition and subtraction. They have shown great dedication and enthusiasm which is truly impressive. During our lessons, some of the children have been using a 100 square to help them with their addition and subtraction problems. It's been amazing to see how this visual aid has supported their understanding and boosted their confidence in tackling more challenging calculations.

Next week we will be diving into the world of multiplication. This topic will provide a strong foundation for their mathematical skills and open up exciting opportunities for them to engage with different concepts and problem-solving strategies.

As we move forward, I encourage you to continue supporting your child's learning at home by practising multiplication facts and encouraging them to apply their skills in real-life situations. This ongoing reinforcement will help them consolidate their understanding and build a solid grasp of the topic.

  P.S.H.E

Our focus has been on the theme 'Your Words Can Hurt'. We delved into the story 'Words and Your Heart' to understand the impact of our words on others and ourselves.

To kickstart the week, we prioritised our own wellbeing. We began by checking in with our feelings, ensuring everyone was in a good space. We took care of basic needs like having a drink, going to the toilet, and even enjoyed a relaxing massage. We also watched a cheerful music video and explored the Zen Den for moments of calm and reflection.

We explored the power of kindness by considering how we speak to and treat one another. In a thought-provoking activity, we saw firsthand how unkind words can leave lasting marks - even if we try to make amends later. This led us to brainstorm ways to spread kindness and respond positively, even in challenging situations.

Our classroom was filled with love as we exchanged thoughtful notes and compliments. By drawing names and highlighting each other's positive traits, we fostered a culture of kindness and appreciation. Through activities like passing around an apple with care and observing its internal reactions to kind and unkind treatment, we learned valuable lessons about the impact of our actions.

We also discussed handling emotions like anger and the importance of choosing our words carefully, especially online. Collaborating with peers, we prepared a presentation for the younger students, sharing insights on online kindness and ways to address online negativity.

It's been a fulfilling week of learning and reflection, and I'm proud of the empathy and understanding the children have shown towards one another.
