What a wonderful week we have had…

Read, Write Inc.

We have been really enjoying our new Read, Write, Inc groups! We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

Reading

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading. 

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! 

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

This week in Maths we have been looking at addition. We began the week by using our knowledge of number bonds to 10, to support us in knowing our number bonds to 20! If we know 8 +2 = 10 then we know 18 +2= 20. We then looked at finding all possibilities to make number bonds to 20 and worked backwards to help us. To end the week we then began adding two 1 digit numbers, and then... 1 digit numbers to 2 digit numbers!

In Art we looked at a range of sculptures! We then thought of a variety of questions to ask the artists themselves!

 

Thematic

This week in our thematic topic ‘Explorers’ We have been focussing on History! We looked at two wonderful explorers from the past. Our first one was; Captain James Cook, we learned about hi life and discoveries and wrote some wonderful facts about him! We then moved on to Charles Darwin, we leant all about his life and the qualities he had as an explorer. We then looked at his idea of natural selection. We had a go at this by using different sized beaks (Tweezers) to pick up a range of animal food! To end the week, we pretended we was Charles Darwin himself and made careful observations about a new species we discovered!

Art

This week we had a clay art exhibition pop up outside our classroom! We  were introduced to the medium of clay and encouraged to explore  the various clay pieces on display and discuss what they were, how we thought they were made and what they were made from. We were then shown how the artist (Miss Bryson's mum!) made the different pieces by  using their thumb and fingers to pinch the clay for some,  and roll and coil the clay into forms for others. Finally, we came  with some questions of our own to ask the artist! We loved the experience and cannot wait to start making our own thumb and coil pots later this term!

Other news

World Book Day Thursday 7^th March 2024

This year's World Book Day theme will be bedtime stories / reading for pleasure.  We invite children to share their favourite bedtime story book on this day and if they wish, come to school dressed in their bedtime clothing!  Children are invited to dress up as their favorite character from a book if they prefer another option.  We would like to remind families that there is no expectation for you to spend money on costumes.  An enjoyment of reading and sharing a story is our main aim for World Book Day this year.  

The Chilton Masked Reader

This year, we will share Chilton Masked Reader videos for World Book Day.  These videos will be created by our talented members of staff who will read a story without reveling their faces.  We hope our Chilton families will enjoy the stories and guess who the masked readers are! Links to these videos will be available on all school Blogs. 

Book Fayre

The Chilton Book Fayre will arrive on Monday 11^th March and run until Friday 15^th March outside the Year 5 classrooms. World Book Day book vouchers can we spent at the fayre. Cash and online payments are also available and a percentage of monies raised will go towards funding more books for Chilton children. 

PE is on a Wednesday.

Sports project will be on a Tuesday – Only trainers needed, with full school uniform.

Doors will continue to open in the morning at 8:30am. Registration will be at the slightly earlier time of 8:45am (doors close at this tim).

Mrs Reavill will be teaching Team Peacock every Tuesday. 

Miss Kennedy will be teaching Team Azure every Friday afternoon.
