Wow, we have had the best week ever! From porridge tasting to temperature experiments and getting into the swing of Nativity rehearsals, we have been busy!

Read, Write Inc.

This week we have continued working incredibly hard in our Read, Write, Ink groups. We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

Storytime! 

This week we looked at Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We had a blast dressing up and acting out the story, though most of us didn't think much of the porridge! Hang onto your chairs, our innovations are coming soon!

Reading

 

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading. 

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this! 

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

On Monday, we looked at pictures from traditional tales and practiced using our maths language to describe the distance between objects and characters in the scene. On Tuesday, we discussed the difference between height and length. and had to put objects in order from shortest to tallest and smallest to longest. On Thursday, we focussed on our problem solving skill: Trial and Improvement. We had a go at estimating how long or tall items would be in cubes then practiced measuring them accurately with cubes.

Next week we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes.

Thematic Curriculum  

This week we continued our work around seasons, weather and temperature. We revisited weather symbols and discussed weather patterns typical to the UK. We learnt about two very important scientists from the past, Anders Celsius and Daniel Fahrenheit. We learnt about how they created the thermometer and temperature scales before having a go at making our own thermometer, using food dye, alcohol and boiling water. Team Peacock's experiment was more successful than Azure's, but luckily they invited us in to see how the red liquid in their thermometer rose up the straw because of the heat! We loved becoming scientists and couldn’t believe what we saw!

Love to Learn

This week, we would love for you to continue practising measuring and using the language we have learnt this week. You could look at your family and discuss who is the tallest and who is the shortest, or line up some of your favourite objects from shortest to longest. You could measure the height and length of things in your house and even estimate what you think they will measure beforehand, but remember, whatever you are using to measure with needs to be the same (e.g. paper clips or spoons)! Record in any way you wish.

Other news

PE is on a Wednesday. Team Azure will be focussing on Gymnastics indoors. Team Peacock will be doing Outdoor Adventure Activities, so please remember to wrap up warm on Wednesdays!

Sports project will be on a Tuesday – Only trainers needed, with full school uniform.

Doors will continue to open in the morning at 8:30am. Registration will be at the slightly earlier time of 8:45am (doors close at this time).

Mrs Reavill will be teaching Team Peacock every Tuesday.

Monday 27th – Thursday 30th – Book Fair in School

Friday 8th December - children bring home a white bag to decorate a fill with small gifts. 

Monday 11th December – Year 1 Christmas Performance (doors 9:00 for a 9:15 start)

Tuesday 12th December - Reception, Year 1 & 2 Christmas Parties. White bags, bottles for tombola and any donations to run stalls due.

Wednesday 13th December - Christmas Fair from 3:15-4.45

Friday 15th December – Christmas Jumper Day (just for fun) and Christmas Dinner - School ends at 2:00

Term 3 starts for Children Wednesday 3rd January
