One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 10.11.23

Wow, what a busy week we've had. Alongside our learning in lessons, we learned all about Rememberance Day and why we buy poppies, and why Hindus light candles and fireworks for the Diwali festival!

Read, Write Inc.

This week we have continued working hard in our Read, Write, Ink groups. Some of us have even changed groups and have been spending this week getting to know them. We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words because we all know you can't fred a red! In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practise with these would be wonderful!

Storytime

We have a new addition to our daily timetable...storytime! Each week this term we will be focussing on a different traditional tale. This week we looked at Little Red Riding Hood. We loved guessing what the tale was going to be by exploring props from the story and making up actions to go with it. We made story maps and even had a go at innovating, creating our own version. Ask us all about it or revisit our stories below!

Reading

Read at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about money. We started with discussing what money is and how we use it to pay for things. We explored the different coins we use; noting the shape, metal and value, and had a go at ordering them. We also discussed some word problems and used reasoning to explain our answers. We learnt how to exchange next. We had to count how much money there was in a purse or a money jar. We then had to find the coin which had the same value. We had to practise our counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to help us today. What superstars we were with this!

Next week we will be continuing with money, focussing on addition!

Thematic Curriculum

In Geography we have been learning about the United Kingdom. We did a carousel of activities to help us recognise the four countries that make up the United Kingdom locating the countries and capitals of the UK, tasting some yummy food from each country, making our own flags, and trying to speak some different languages! We also learnt about our capital cities; we labelled maps, made our own playdoh maps and plotted the capital cities and flags on a map.

Next week we will be learning all about kindness in PSHE.

Love to Learn

This week we would love for you to go shopping and have a go at using real money! You could play shops at home or go to a real one! Take photos or record what you bought, the price, and the coins that you needed to buy it - just don't spend it all at once!
