We have had an AMAZING penultimate week to term. Read on to find out what we have been doing.

Read, Write Inc

The children have been continuing to work hard in their RWI sessions this week. When reading we have been encouraging children to spot the special friend in the word before sounding it out (Fred talking). For example in the word shine, they would spot the ‘sh’  and 'i-e' first, then Fred talk (sh-i*e- n) and then say the word (shine) The children know that a chatty friend, has to have a letter in between to stop it from chatting!

In RWI, children read the same story several times. This is important as it helps children to become familiar with the story and the words and help to improve their fluency when reading. This is something we would encourage when reading at home too. This will really help with their confidence when reading and can also make answering questions about what they have read easier too.

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.

Maths

This week in maths we have been learning about data and statistics. We started off the week by collecting some of our own class data, recording the number of people with different eye colours in a tally chart, before challenging ourselves to translate this information into pictograms. Next, we learnt how to interpret data from block diagrams and bar charts by answering questions. We had to be careful to check the scale before reading the totals. Finally we had some fun exploring Carrol diagrams and Venn diagrams! Take a look!

Thematic Curriculum

This week in our thematic lessons we have been learning all about food chains and we even made our own paper food chains, linking up the order of food that animals eat. We also learnt about plants that were used as medicine in the past. For example, daffodils were used to cure hair loss, and hyacinths were used to help people wee!

​Love to Learn:

This week we would love for you to record something that you are proud of yourself for achieving this year. Think right back to the beginning of Year 1, could you read and write like you can now? Have you made some special friends or done any acts of kindness? You can record this in any way you wish.

NEXT WEEK

Please send your children in with a heavy duty (if possible) carrier bag so we can give them their learning books from this year to take home.

Next week children will be having their transition days for Year 2. These will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

On MONDAY, children will come into the Year 1 classrooms as normal and move to their new class after assembly. They will be collected from their new Year 2 classrooms.

On TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY, children will arrive and leave from their new Year 2 classrooms. There will be no Sports Project or P.E.

On THURSDAY children return to Year 1 for the final 2 days of term. It is Inflatable Fun Day! It is a non-school uniform day. Children need to wear shoes that are easy for them to slip on and off to go on the different inflatables. Please also choose sensible clothes that will minimise skin burn from the plastic.

On FRIDAY, children come to their usual classrooms again. There will be no reading at 3 as the school day ends at 2pm.

Chilton transition days – Monday 17th July to Wednesday 19th July - The classroom is next door to ours! 

Inflatable Fun Day – Thursday 20th July (Please wear suitable clothes)

School ends for the summer – Friday 21st July 2pm
